The 10 best black comedy TV shows include some of the greatest sitcoms to ever air on American television. They range from shows made for comedians and rap stars to sketch comedy shows that made the entire cast a worldwide star. These shows were tailored for a specific audience, but found mainstream success the world over.

  1. “The Cosby Show” – “The Cosby Show” is one of the best sitcoms of all time and one of the best black comedy TV shows ever made. Bill Cosby stars in the series, which lasted eight years and was nominated for 29 Emmy awards, winning six of them. It also produced a spinoff called “A Different World.”
  2. “The Jeffersons” – This popular series was a spinoff from “All in the Family” and remains one of the best black comedy TV shows of all time. The show follows the life of the Jefferson’s, a rich African American family who live in a luxurious apartment building and shows their relationship with other tenants.
  3. “In Living Color” – In order to compete for the African American audience in the sketch comedy market, the Wayans family created this series, one of the best black comedy TV shows. The show introduced the world to Jim Carey, David Allen Greer, Jamie Foxx and the Wayans&rsquo brothers.
  4. “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” – Rap star Will Smith made his transition to acting in this, one of the best black comedy TV shows of all time. Smith played his persona of the Fresh Prince, a Philadelphia teenager who is sent to live with an affluent California family and hyjinks ensued.
  5. “Sanford and Son” – Redd Foxx stars as a junkyard dealer and his son in this, one of the best black comedy TV shows of all time. The series lasted six seasons and won a Golden Globe award for Foxx. It was also nominated for seven Emmys over the shows lifetime.
  6. “Good Times” – Jimmie Walker stars in this ‘70s sitcom, one of the best black comedy TV shows. Walker plays J.J. Evans, whose key phrase of “Dynamite” lived on long after the show stopped airing. The series lasted six seasons and told the story of a black family in the Chicago housing projects.
  7. “Diff’rent Strokes”Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges star as two black children adopted by a rich white man after their mother dies. This, one of the beat black comedy shows, has followed tragedy since it's demise, as two of the three kids are now dead and the third has spent time in prison.
  8. “Martin”Martin Lawrence stars in this comedy, one of the best black comedy TV shows. Martin plays a big-mouth talk show host who attempts to get through life without putting his foot into his mouth one too many times. The show also presented Lawrence’s ability to play female characters such as Sheneneh.
  9. “The Bernie Mac Show” – Comedian Bernie Mac parlayed his success into this sitcom, one of the best black comedy TV shows. The show follows the life of Bernie Mac, playing himself, as he suddenly becomes a father by taking custody of his sister’s three kids. The show is a humorous look at a man in over his head.
  10. “Everybody Hates Chris”Chris Rock produces this sitcom and provides a voice over in one of the best black comedy TV shows. The series follows a young boy named Chris, based loosely on Chris Rock’s own childhood and his dysfunctional family life.
