  1. “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000). This is easily the best Chinese movie of all time. The film’s original title is “Wo Hu cang long”. The movie is about two warriors in the pursuit of a stolen sword. With lots of action, the movie stars Yun-Fat Chow, Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang.
  2. “The Forbidden Kingdom” (2008). This is a slightly more Americanized Chinese movie but it does a great job of blending the cultures. It’s about a kung fu obsesse American teen who gets sent on a magically trip to historical China. He is joined by legendary martial arts masters and most help them defeat the Monkey King. This movie based on Chinese legends stars Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Michael Angarano.
  3. “Fearless” (2006). The original title of this Chinese movie is “Huo Yuanjia” and was named for the martial artist whose life the movie tells. The film stars Jet Li, Shido Nakamura and Betty Sun.
  4. “Kung Fu Hustle” (2004). The original title of this Chinese movie is “Kung Fu” but it was changed when it was released in many other countries including the US. The movie was about a man trying to get into a gang but finds the people in a housing complex that he needs to control have some unusual powers. The movie stars Stephen Chow, Wah Yuen and Qiu Yuen.
  5. “House of Flying Daggers” (2004). The movie was originally titled “Shi mian mai fu”. In this Chinese movie a police captain breaks a beautiful woman out of prison so she can rejoin her rebel group. The movie stars Ziyi Zhang, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau.
  6. “Curse of the Golden Flower” (2006). The original title of this movie is “Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia”. This Chinese movie is set during the Tang dynasty and is about a princess, who in taken by a neighboring emperor to be his wife. The movie stars Yun-Fat Chow, Li Gon and Jay Chou.
  7. “Farewell my Concubine” (1993). The original title of this movie is “Ba wang bie ji”.  It is the story of two men in the Peking Opera. The film stars Leslie Cheung, Fengyi Zhang and Li Gong.
  8. “Raise the Red Lantern” (1991). The original title of this movie is “Da hong deng long gao gao gua”. The movie is set in China in the 1920s and is about a young woman that is forced to marry a older, wealthy man. The movie stars Li Gong, Jingwu Ma and Saifei He.
  9. “To Live” (1994). The original title of this movie is “Huozhe”. This movie tells of the struggles of a couple raising a family in China during the '40s through the '70s. The movie stars You Ge, Li Gong and Ben Niu.
  10. “The Story of Qiu Ju” (1992). The original title of this movie is “Qiu ju da guan si”. This is a Chinese comedy movie about a woman who takes on the government after a village chief kicks her husband in the groin. The movie stars Li Gong, Peiqi Liu and Liuchun Yang.
