Hollywood has produced hundreds of movies about doomsday, the apocalypse, Armageddon, and the end of the world. This short list, arranged by film date, represents some of the best-known films about life after an apocalypse.

  1. “On The Beach.” “On The Beach” is a 1959 science fiction drama about Australia after a global nuclear war. The country’s residents must come to terms with the knowledge that all life will end within months. The award-nominated film stars Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Fred Astaire.
  2. “Planet Of The Apes.” “Planet Of The Apes” is one of the best-known post-apocalyptic movies. When American astronauts land on a planet in the future, they discover a world dominated by apes. Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, and Kim Hunter star in this award-nominated 1968 film, whose ending is one of motion picture’s classic moments.
  3. “A Boy And His Dog.” “A Boy And His Dog” is a 1975 science fiction comedy about a boy who communicates with his dog telepathically. This comic post-apocalyptic story is based on a Harlan Ellison novella. The film stars Don Johnson and Jason Robards.
  4. “Logan’s Run.” In the 1976 science fiction film “Logan’s Run,” a pleasant, peaceful future world has one very serious problem–life must end at age 30. Michael York, Jenny Agutter, and Richard Jordan star in this Oscar-nominated movie.
  5. “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.” “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” is a 1981 sci-fi action-adventure movie starring Mel Gibson. Set in post-apocalyptic Australia, the film centers on a cynical drifter who agrees to help a small community escape a group of bandits.
  6. “The Terminator.” “The Terminator” is a 1984 sci-fi action thriller starring Arnold Schwarzeneggar and Linda Hamilton. The story centers on a relentless, human-looking cyborg from the future, whose mission is to kill a woman whose life will have significance in the future.
  7. “Twelve Monkeys.” “Twelve Monkeys” is a 1995 sci-fi mystery thriller about a future world devastated by disease. The story revolves around a man who is sent back in time to learn more about the virus that killed most of the people on the planet. The film stars Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, and Madeleine Stowe.
  8. “Waterworld.” “Waterworld” is a 1995 movie starring Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, and Jeanne Tripplehorn. The science fiction adventure film tells of a future world where most of the earth is under water, and a mutated mariner helps a woman and a child find dry land. 
  9. “The Road.” “The Road” is a 2009 sci-fi adventure film starring Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The award-winning movie is a powerful post-apocalyptic tale about a man and his son struggling to survive.
  10. “The Book Of Eli.” “The Book Of Eli” is a 2010 post-apocalyptic movie starring Denzel Washington and Mila Kunis. The story centers on a man who fights his way across the country, as he protects the sacred book that will save mankind.
