Who are the most remarkable modern tragic heroes in movies? Tragic heroes have a sacred place in classic literature, striking the heart of the reader as they move mountains only to end up the pawn of fate. Movies today serve to pull the same deeply emotional strings of the viewer when the tragic hero role is done well. Feel sorry for them, be inspired by them or both, that is your choice, but these modern tragic heroes are sure to reach something deep inside of you.

  1. The Terminator Folding time and space to embrace his fate, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a cyborg sent from the future to protect the leader (Eddie Furlong) of a resistance movement yet to be created. After being the antagonist of "The Terminator," Schwarzenegger is reprogrammed to become the hero of "Terminator 2: Judgement Day". Unrivaled in his loyalty to his commander, it is this same devotion that seals his tragic fate.
  2. Anakin Skywalker Played by Hayden Christensen, Anakin Skywalker is one of the most well known villains of the past 40 years, but in this prequel to the renowned "Star Wars"saga, we ar taken on a journey through a heroes rise and fall. A Jedi master destined for greatness, Skywalker cannot accept a tragic fate we all know is already sealed. Sacrificing everything he has learned and upheld to preserve a love he will lose, Skywalker must in the end become the epitome of the downfall he did everything to avoid, making "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith" a remarkable display of modern tragedy in the movies.
  3. Mad Max Mel Gibson as Mad Max is a modern tragic hero in a post apocalyptic era, set on bringing order to a world of chaos. As an officer he feels restrained by the law he had sworn to protect. On the brink and overwhelmed by the wanton savagery of the world around him, he takes a sabbatical with his family to relieve the pressures of his occupation, only to find he must sacrifice everything to become the vigilante he hoped he could repress.
  4. El Mariachi A simple mariachi is hurled into a series of unfortunate events, which force him to become the hero of a lawless Mexican town in this Robert Rodriguez action flick, "El Mariachi.&quot Fighting against the odds to simply survive, el mariachi (Carlos Gallardo) struggles to find an escape from a hit squad sent by a ruthless drug lord. Hayden Christensen gave us a moving portrayal in Revenge of the Sith. For a 20 year old guy to have given Anakin that turmoil within his life and making him actually LIKE Vader anyway was genius. He is one amazing actor and a darn nice guy!

George Lucas took his time unfolding this morality tale of how someone good is seduced to the dark side for noble reasons and good intentions. Hayden Christensen was perfect in the role and even though I knew how it all turns out, his performance still had me saying to myself, “No Anakin, no!”. I was totally caught up in the story and characters.
