Fantasy Adventure Movies

The best fantasy adventure movies transport the viewers to a world that is different from our own, be it a world long past or far into the future. Fantasy adventure movies tend to focus on a quest of some sort, often with the fate of the fictional world the film has created hanging in the balance. Here are the best fantasy adventure movies to grace the silver screen.

  1. "The Empire Strikes Back." The "Star Wars" series, the original three films (the less said about the prequels the better) are the definitive fantasy adventure movies for entire generations, and the best of the series is the second film, "The Empire Strikes Back." Like many fantasy adventure movies, it has a hero, Luke Skywalker, going off on his own to find himself, in the darker half of the story. The lighter side has the hero's friends, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2 fleeing the Empire in a series of amazing space chases. The revelation at the end of the film sets the stage for the final battle of the third film.
  2. "The Fellowship of the Ring." Many thought the "Lord of the Rings" series could not be adapted to film, but Peter Jackson proved the world wrong with this first entry in the series, any of which could appear on a list of great fantasy adventure movies. In it, Frodo Baggins is entrusted with the quest to destroy the ring of power and restore balance to the world, defeating the evil forces of Sauron. In this great example of fantasy adventure movies, the team of the quest is assembled and the table is set for the rest of the trilogy of fantasy adventure movies.
  3. "Conan the Barbarian." Arnold Schwarzenegger's breakout to a larger audience came as the star of this great fantasy adventure movie for adults, filled with bloody action, sex, and revenge. He plays the title character, a barbarian seeking revenge for the death of his family at the hands of Thulsa Doom, a cult leader played by James Earl Jones, always a great fantasy villain. A classic score, brutal swordplay, and tons of flesh makes this the perfect example of fantasy adventure movies for adults.
  4. "The NeverEnding Story." While "Conan" is great for adults, "The NeverEnding Story" is one of the best examples of fantasy adventure movies for kids. Bastian, a troubled child, delves into a fantasy world through a mysterious book, and finds himself inside the adventures of Atreyu, a Native American boy seeking to save the Childlike Empress and the world of Fantasia. This magical film closes out our list of great fantasy adventure movies.
