There are a number of fantasy adventure movies for movie nerds that cater to the geek in all movie lovers. These movies are based on comics, sci-fi and other geek friendly properties. While these movies are best for guys, they remain great films for mainstream audiences as well.

  1. “Scott Pilgrim vs the World”Edgar Wright directs this adaptation based on the comic book by Bryan Lee O’Malley about a slacker who has to defeat his new girlfriend’s seven evil exes. The movie is almost a video game movie with everything hyper-real and stylized.

  2. “Lord of the Rings trilogy”Peter Jackson brought the story of J.R.R. Tolkien to life in these extremely successful fantasy adventure movies for movie nerds. The third movie in the series, “Return of the King.” won eleven Oscars.

  3. “Harry Potter franchise” – Based on the young adult novels by J.K. Rowling, the “Harry Potter” movies matured as the children grew into young adults and became one of the best fantasy adventure movies for movie nerds. By the end, “Harry Potter” was not just for kids anymore.

  4. “The City of Lost Children” – Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet teamed up to co-direct this fantasy adventure movie for movie nerds. The movie features a scientist who kidnaps children and steals their dreams. Ron Perlman (“Hellboy”) stars in the film.

  5. “Stardust” – This remains a fantasy adventure movie for movie nerds because it is based on the novel by cult fantasy author Neil Gaiman. The movie is a twisted fairy tale about a man who promises to being his love back a fallen star but finds that the star has taken human form.

  6. “Conan the Barbarian”Arnold Schwarzenegger became a star partially because of his performance in this fantasy adventure movie for movie nerds. Based on the stories by Robert E. Howard, this movie tells the story of a young slave who seeks revenge against the men who massacred his tribe.

  7. “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen” Terry Gilliam of the Monty Python comedy troupe directs this strange movie, one of the best fantasy adventure movies for movie nerds. The story has a young girl meet the mysterious Baron Munchausen who tells her fantastic stories of his life as a hero.

  8. “Clash of the Titans” – Based on classi Greek mythology, this 1981 film remains a cult classic fantasy adventure movie for movie nerds. The film follows Perseus as he attempts to defeat Madusa and the Kraken and save a beautiful princess.

  9. “Heavy Metal” – Based on the classic comic magazine, “Heavy Metal” is the ultimate movie nerd film, taking many of the moments from the magazine and moving it to the big screen. With dark fantasy, horror and erotic adventures, this is the perfect movie for adolescent boys who grew up with the magazine.

  10. “Mortal Kombat” – This remains a classic videogame adaptation, taking the characters from the popula fighting game and placing them in the middle of a great story of good versus evil. Many moments from the games are brought to life and Christopher Lambert delivers a scene-stealing performance.
