Doomsday Movies

Movie viewers take great interest in doomsday movies and apocalyptic films. Hollywood has produced hundreds of films on the subject. Here is a sampling of ten well-known doomsday movies from the last five decades.

  1. “28 Days Later.” “28 Days Later” is a popular British doomsday horror film. This 2002 movie portrays society’s breakdown after the release of a highly contagious virus, focusing on the survivors’ struggles. Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, and Christopher Eccleston star in the film. 
  2. “2012.” “2012” is an epic adventure movie about a global disaster that will cause the world’s end. This 2009 movie focuses on the heroic struggles of the survivors. John Cusack, Amanda Peet, and Danny Glover star in this Oscar-winning film.
  3. “The Andromeda Strain.” “The Andromeda Strain” is a 1971 science fiction thriller. The story centers on a group of scientists who investigate a deadly alien virus before it can spread and destroy the world. The award-nominated film stars James Olson, Arthur Hill, and David Wayne.
  4. “Children Of Men.” “Children Of Men” is a 2006 sci-fi adventure film starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Set in 2027, it depicts a chaotic world in which humans can no longer procreate. An activist agrees to help a miraculously pregnant woman escape, so her child’s birth can help save mankind.
  5. “The Day The Earth Caught Fire.” “The Day The Earth Caught Fire” is a 1961 sci-fi movie and romantic drama. The story revolves around a group of British reporters who suspect an international cover-up of impending global disaster. Edward Judd, Leo McKern, and Janet Munro star in the film.
  6. “Deep Impact.” “Deep Impact” is a 1998 movie about the end of the world. Few survivors are expected, unless American and Russian missiles can destroy a comet before it collides with the earth. This film stars Robert Duvall, Téa Leoni, Elijah Wood, and Leelee Sobieski.
  7. “Independence Day.” “Independence Day” is a 1996 movie starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, and Jeff Goldblum. In this science fiction adventure story, man must fight superior technology in order to survive an alien attack that will destroy the world.
  8. “The Last Man On Earth.” Vincent Price, Franca Bettoia, and Emma Danieli star in “The Last Man On Earth,” a 1964 horror film. When a disease turns everyone on earth into the living dead, the last man becomes a vampire hunter to survive.
  9. “Logan’s Run.” “Logan’s Run” is a 1976 science fiction action film about an idyllic future world where man’s life must end at age 30. This Oscar-nominated film stars Michael York, Jenny Agutter, and Richard Jordan.
  10. “Planet Of The Apes.” “Planet Of The Apes” is an Oscar-nominated movie starring Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, and Kim Hunter. When an astronaut crew lands on a planet in the distant future, they discover a world dominated by apes that enslave humans. The ending provides one of cinema’s classic moments.
