It’s the great debate every guy has with his friends: what are the best action movies of all time? Sure there are lists of hot girls and greatest sports games, but this is the one most men will spend the greatest amount of energy arguing over because despite what their interests are, everyone watches movies and everyone has their favorite action flicks.
“Letha Weapon II” Why is this one of the best action movies of all time? This pre-crazy Mel Gibson and Danny Glover team up has comedy, sexy girls and some of the best action scenes put to film. Besides how can you not like a film that starts in the middle of a car chase?
“Highlander” Sure, the sequels all sucked, but the first one of one of the more creative concepts for a movie; an immortal sword fighter that has to battle other immortals in modern times for the gift of mortality. Also, any movie that can get Scottish Sean Connery to play one of the most unconvincing Spaniards on film deserves the title of best action movie of all time.
“Raiders of the Lost Ark” The first adventure with Indiana Jones is still the best action movie of all time. It had everything going for it. The Spielberg/Lucas team up as producer and director, Harrison Ford in the lead, a great story and Nazis as the villains. It was a match made in heaven and one that was extremely profitable for the studio.
“Die Hard” No one thought that casting a balding sitcom star in a big budget action movie was going to pay off, but it turned into one of the best action movies of all time. Bruce Willis brought humanity and a kind of honesty to the genre that had not previously existed with stars like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“Terminator II: Judgment Day” Schwarzenegger, however, was not without his hits. Long before he bounced into the political arena, he took this sequel and made it into one of the best action movies of all time. Partly aided by some of the most cutting edge special effects that existed in film at the time, he took the original role as a bad guy and turned it on its head, much to the delight of his fans.
“Casino Royale” Once the studio that had been making the James Bond films finally admitted that they has taken the character as far as they could go, they jumped at the chance reboot the character and start him back at square one. From the first scene to the climactic battle in a sinking house, it ranks as one of the best action movies of all time.
“Rambo: First Blood Part II” Stallone caught lightning in a bottle twice after the success of the “Rocky” franchise when he brought the novel “First Blood” and its protagonist, John Rambo, to the big screen. For the sequel, he sent the character back to Vietnam and created one of the best action movies of all time.
“The Matrix” Not everyone thinks of this film as one of the best action movies of all time, partly because of the technological and philosophical aspects of the film, but it was indeed a great action movie of an ordinary guy who finds out that his life is not what it seems to be.
“The Bourne Ultimatum” This is one of those rarities in action movie trilogies. Each and every one is really good. Jason Bourne is a cover name for a black ops agent who in fighting pretty much everyone trying to figure out his real identity. In the third and final installment of the trilogy he gets the answers he seeks only to find they aren’t what he expects.
“Seven Samurai” Still considered by critics and fans alike to be the best action movie of all time, it also is the oldest. Made in 1954, it utilized elements and styles of filmmaking hat have been repeated decades later by some of the modern masters of direction, including George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.
