10 Great Adventure Movies
Asking us to come up with 10 great adventure movies is sort of like asking us to come up with a list of ten great kinds of candy. It isn't quite as easy as it might seem at first glance. There are literally hundreds of great adventure movies that have been made over the course of the last century, but we did indeed manage to narrow down that list.
"The Shawshank Redemption"- This adaptation of a Stephen King tale is widely considered not only one of the best adventure movies but also one of the best movies of all time. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins both play convicts you would like to invite over for dinner, making criminal characters someone you can root for.
"Pulp Fiction" - This movie might have some of the better performances of Samuel L. Jackson's, John Travolta's and Uma Thurman's careers. The fact that you follow several stories that intersect in original ways only make the adventure better.
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" - Indiana Jones is the quintessential accidental hero. He isn't bulked up or has super powers, he's simply an adventuring archaeologist who manages to get out of some tough spots.
"Inception" - This is the newest movie on this list by at least a decade, and that's quite an accomplishment. This flick about a gang of thieves who actually invade people's dreams in order to pull off heists is expertly done.
"The Dark Knight" - This reimagining of Batman with a darker undertone is one of the best movies out there right now. Heath Ledger as a truly insane and murderous Joker is simply the icing on a great cake.
"Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" - The movie that set up one of the greatest trilogies in movie history has to be on this list. While this movie was maybe the least action packed of the three, it offered backstories the likes of which the others couldn't. You really got to know the heroes because of this movie.
"The Matrix" - Of course, this mindbender is on here. Still one of the best adventure movies in history, this movie is so good because you take the journey with Neo. You have no idea what is going to happen when he takes the pill and the outcome doesn't disappoint.
"Terminator 2: Judgement Day" - While the movie has been eroded a bit over time thanks to some truly cheesy lines, this is still the best of the "Terminator" series. This sets the stage very well in showing just how difficult an enemy Skynet really is.
"Saving Private Ryan" - This movie was so good, we think it gets forgotten because people don't know how to categorize it. A group of soldiers get a mission that kills most of them simply to save one man. It's a great adventure story and allegory about the ridiculousness of war.
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1" - We understand that a lot of people didn't really like this movie. We loved it because it took such a dark turn. No adventure movie has managed to keep our attention with so few fight scenes and so much fleshing out of the characters. "Deathly Hallows Part 2" is destined to replace this when it's released.
