The Snow Walker (2003) starring Barry Pepper and Annabella Piugattuk should really be on this list. Directed by Charles Martin Smith, this is a remarkable story of a pilot and his passenger’s struggle to survive after the plane crashes in Alaska. Set in the 1950s, the seriously ill Inuit passenger manages to teach the naive pilot native skills needed to survive until they are located.

into the wild was terrible. It’s a how to on how not to survive. I think Jeramiah Johnson and the edge aremuch better choices.

Somone should mention that both Omega Man and Living Legend are remakes of Last Man on Earth, a classic Italian Vincent Price 50′s zombie film.

“I Am Legend” is TOTALLY a survival movie! Like the ULTIMATE survival movie. How can someone say that he did a crappy job at it? I agree with “Alive” being up there. The real story is even more harrowing than the movie, of course, as they cut lots of stuff. Had “Adrift” been a movie (instead of just an episode of “I Shouldn’t Be Alive”), it would have made the list – 80 days on a raft! I’d also think that the new “127 Hours” might make this list.

Can’t believe Dawn of the Dead is even on this list. What a crock for a movie. Taking it serious or funny, to me it’s neither it is junk!!! And Mad Max?? Geeezzzz, that’s desperation. What about “The Ten Commandments”? Now there is a movie of survival, learning and respect just to name a few of its
great qualities. And on my list “The Jerk” is a great survival movie and funny, Steve Martin’s finest.

I second Touching the Void. Also, Red Dawn, although a war fantasy, is also pretty much a survivalist fantasy. And a damn good movie.

Why aren’t “A Far off Place”, “Never Cry Wolf” and “The Snow Walker” on here? Considering in I AM LEGEND the main character is actually pretty crappy at the whole survival thing, I don’t even think it should be listed. Same for War of the Worlds. This list isn’t really worth being linked to through Les Stroud’s Facebook.
