Go on a quest without leaving your couch with these 10 best adventure movies of the decade. Some of the best adventure movies of all time were released in the decade between 2000 through 2010. Adventure movies are known for fast paced plots, lots of action and the cutting edge of special effects. These 10 best adventure movies have all three.

  1. The “Harry Potter” series (2001 – 2010). These are the adventure movies that took over the decade. The series is about a young wizard named Harry Potter and his fight to save his world from an evil wizard. The movies are based on the children’s book series by J.K. Rowling. The first move was “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone” and was released in 2001. Closing the decade in 2010 was “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” and the second part of the movie is set to be released in 2011.
  2. The “Lord of the Rings” series (2001 – 2003). These adventure moviestook movie goers on a fantasy rider during the start of the decade. The movies are based on the books by J. R. R. Tolkien. The trilogy follows the hobbit Frodo and the quest to save Middle Earth.
  3. “Avatar” (2009). This adventure movie took fans on a 3D ride. It’s the story of an alien rac fighting to keep their planet and a marine pulled into their world. The movie stared Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver.
  4. “True Grit” (2010). In this adventure movie a U.S. Marshal helps a young woman find her father’s killer. The movie stared Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld.
  5. “Inglourious Basterds” (2009). This alternate history film took fans on an adventure ride through Nazi-occupied France during World War II. A group of Jewish-American soldiers, “The Basterds”, are given the mission to spread fear by brutally killing Nazis. The movie was written and directed by Quentin Tarantion. The film stared Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger and Eli Roth.
  6. “Gladiator” (2000) This adventure movie kicked off the decade by taking fans to ancient Rome. The film tells the story of a general who is betrayed by a prince and after the murder of his family he becomes a gladiator in the hopes of seeking revenge. The movie stared Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix and Connie Nielsen.
  7. “Star Trek” (2009). This science fiction adventure movie was much anticipated for Star Trek fans. The movie told the early story of James Kirk and other members of the USS Enterprise. The movie stared Christ Pine, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg.
  8. “Batman Begins” (2005). This movie told the early adventures of Bruce Wayne and outlined how he became Batman. The movie stared Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Ken Watanabe.
  9. “District 9” (2009). This science fiction movie made fans rethink any ideas they had of alien invasions. An alien race crash lands on Earth and they are forced to live in a slum-like containment camp. The adventure starts when a government agent is exposed to their biotechnology.
  10. “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2007). This action packed conclusion of the trilogy was the best move of the three. It told the story of Jason Bourne and his quest to discover the details of his past as a trained killer. The movie starred Matt Damon, Edgar Ramirez and Joan Allen.
