10 Best Action Movies Of The 2000's
The 2000's launched the action movie decade to new heights, but it's these 10 best action movies of the 2000's that represent the best of the best. From Batman to James Bond, from Quentin Tarantino to Ang Lee, these ten action movies went far beyond the typical explosions-and-testosterone formula.
"The Dark Knight." Easily the best superhero movie ever made, "The Dark Knight" proved to be the best action movie of the decade. While Christian Bale has the role of Bruce Wayne locked down, it was Heath Ledger's last performance as the infamous Joker that pushed this movie twenty levels higher than "Batman Begins."
The "Kill Bill" series. Quentin Tarantino excels at the genre he's created for himself: high-stakes, nonlinear, bloody action flicks with strong characters and moments of hilarity. Both 2003's "Kill Bil"l and 2004's "Kill Bill II" gave us some of the best action scenes of the decade.
"Casino Royale." 2006 was the year that James Bond came back. Not since Sean Connery had audiences seen such a surefire James Bond. Daniel Craig was tough, yet vulnerable; he was sexy, but he was real, too. "Casino Royale" proved that James Bond could definitely exist in the new millennium.
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." 2000 kicked off with a bang thanks to Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." The movie was unlike anything we'd ever seen before in the action genre. This movie helped moviegoers realize the action movie genre had come a long way since the days of Rambo.
"Ocean's Eleven." 2001's smart, slick and sexy action flick "Ocean's Eleven" turned the entire country into wannabe con artists. This movie held one of the best ensemble casts in cinematic history.
"Sin City." 2005's "Sin City" was one of the gutsiest movies of the decade in terms of artistry. The film's colors, storytelling, and comic-like design created one of the edgiest action flicks of the decade while still remaining true to Frank Miller's signature style.
"Gladiator." This 2000 action movie took home an impressive five Oscars, including a Best Actor win for Russell Crowe's performance as Maximus. This is definitely one of the best revenge stories of the decade.
"The Bourne Identity." The "Bourne" series, starring Matt Damon, was a favorite of many action fans throughout the decade. Whether "Identity," "Supremacy," or "Ultimatum" was your favorite, you have to admit that it was 2002's "The Bourne Identity" that really set the pace for the entire trilogy.
"Spider-Man." Along with the "X-men" trilogy in the early part of the decade, 2002's "Spider-Man" helped popularize the superhero genre for the masses. "Spider-Man" helped pave the way for a slew of superhero flicks that followed, including films featurin Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Superman, and of course, Batman.
"300." "300" marks the second Frank Miller film on our list. "300" was unabashedly gory and beautifully stylized. The movie thrilled 2006 audiences and ensured the Battle Cry of the Decade would be King Leonidas' famous cry, "This is Sparta!"
