Terence Malick, known best for his pensive films featuring broad landscapes, gives us something else entirely with Knight of Cups, which stars Christian Bale and a host of other names (Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Armin Mueller-Stahl).

The film, which seems to be a frenetic Los Angeles romp, will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

However, lest you think that Terence Malick has just adopted some music video chops to make his film play with the ADD crowd, we get an official synopsis that seems more in keeping with the auteur:

Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep. Rick’s father used to read this story to him as a boy. The road to the East stretches out before him. Will he set forth?

Huh. That doesn’t seem to match up with the coke and the lingerie and the cars so much. It’s almost like there’s some deeper meaning behind all the vapidity presented. Bravo, Mr. Malick. Things are not always what they seem.

Karl Urban and James Marsden lead the cast of friends who suddenly can’t trust one another when it seems that one of their own has transformed their poon palace into a murder house. Not cool, bro. There are house rules about that sort of thing.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Jason Statham is a rogue tough-guy who gets by hustling and dealing with less-than-savory folks, all while wearing a grim face.

That’s right! It’s most every Jason Statham film since Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. But there’s a reason he keeps going back to that well. It works for him. Here in Wild Card, the Statham archetype is dropped in Vegas, hence the clever title.

He runs around Sin City offering fun little nuggets like “I take care of things. That’s all you need to know,” which karate chopping everyone in his path.

We’re not complaining, because the film looks kind of fun, but it’s nothing new, judging from this trailer.

Of course, they may know something we don’t about media, because sharing clips like these has resulted in a billion views for his YouTube channel. In case you aren’t familiar with traffic metrics…

That’s a lot of views.

Here’s the clip. It’s pretty damn funny, and pound-for-pound, one of the funniest clips I’ve seen in a while:

Setting it to music with Conan’s tired face totally seals the deal. Enjoy.

While the Sony hacker story hasn’t been as interesting to us as it has been to many other entertainment outlets, we are intrigued by a statement the hackers made over the weekend, saying that we can expect a “Christmas gift” that will “put Sony Pictures into the worst state.”

Yikes. That sounds pretty bad.

The Guardians of Peace, the group taking credit for the hack, has really had their way with Sony recently, putting what appears to be everything on their computers online for the (somewhat complicit) media to read and post. Without the media sharing the stolen files, this likely wouldn’t be more than a security breach story. But it’s much more now.

And likely to be far more in the future if these guys deliver on the cryptic threat of a “Christmas gift.” Maybe they’re being meta, and the ominous Christmas gift they’re speaking of is insensitivity to other faiths by not referring to it as a “holiday gift.”

That would be lame.

Afraid that the collective charms of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Pratt would create some sort of vortex or black hole in the universe, Marvel has decided to keep the franchises separate for the time being. But we all know how this story ends.

Guardians director James Gunn told our very own site in an interview/Q&A:

We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don’t think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all this. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save. Earth is the Avengers’ province. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it’s gonna happen.

”We have our own galaxy to save.” True words, Mr. Gunn.
The question was more related to tone than content, but Gunn shifted the answer to something that may actually have been a little newsworthy. Also, I’m sure that everyone is very protective of the universes they’ve helped create, and maybe Gunn doesn’t want his funny successful world all Avenger‘d up by Marvel.
It’s safe…for now.

Review: ‘The Babadook’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/review-the-babadook/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/review-the-babadook/#comments Sat, 13 Dec 2014 00:01:46 +0000 Jared Jones http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=268148 A fresh breath of air into a genre whose most recent financial success centered around a haunted cardboard game.

The post Review: ‘The Babadook’ appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
By Jared Jones

While standing in line for a screening of Alive Inside earlier this week, I happened to overhear a group of teenagers anxiously discussing another movie that was playing that night — Australian newcomer Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook.

“It’s gonna be the scariest movie since Insidious.” said one of them.

“I just hope it’s better than Ouija,” another one chimed in.

My first thought was, “Since Insidious? FUCK YOU.” This was quickly followed by the blackout rage that I am struck with whenever anyone mentions Ouija, the lamest mainstream success of a horror movie since, well, Insidious.

My third thought, however, was, “Oh boy, are you about to be disappointed.” Because while Insidious and The Babadook tell somewhat similar stories on a surface level, there could not be a bigger discrepancy in how they choose to tell them. Whereas Insidious opted for the approach that American horror fans have become increasingly familiar with — a paper-thin plot held together by an endless smorgasbord of jump scares which ultimately collapses in on itself in the third act — The Babadook actually spends its runtime exploring relatable, psychologically-rooted fears like social alienation and loss.

What’s this, fully realized characters? Emotional resonance? Babadook’s noticeable lack of cheap gimmicks and cerebral approach to its material can only mean that it will bomb hard at the box office this weekend, although the fact that the screening those teenagers were planning to attend was sold out gives me hope.

The Babadook tells your classic woman-whose-husband-died-in-a-car-wreck-while-driving-her-to-the-hospital-to-deliver-their-baby story, but with a “child from Hell” kicker thrown in for good measure. Six or so years (I suck at guessing children’s ages) after said death of her husband, Amelia is still struggling to move on emotionally, no thanks to the increasingly sadistic actions of her son, Sam. You see, Amelia carries a deep hatred (or at least resentment) for her son deep inside her, and not just because he serves as a constant reminder of her deceased husband, who for all intents and purposes looked like a professional tennis player and smelled like lilacs. Sam’s repeated offenses at school have earned them both something of a social pariah status in town, to the point that not a day can pass without Amelia being called out of work to attend to another one of her son’s increasingly frustrating needs.

In an attempt to get her demon child to go the f*ck to sleep one night, Amelia reads him the tale of “The Babadook”, a menacing, tophat wearing monster who infiltrates the lives of all who read his book. Shortly thereafter, strange goings on begin to occur in their home each night, with Sam blaming them all on the creature that is definitely probably just a figment of his imagination. When Amelia begins to suffer from her own sleep-deprived delusions and lash out at Sam in response, it becomes more and more apparent what the Babadook truly is and what force is driving it.

Oddly enough, one of the most immediate aspects of The Babadook that jumps at you is its attention to set design. The majority of the film takes place in Amelia’s home, a vacant, gloomy Victorian whose monotonic blue-gray walls, stairs, floors, and everything else pull you into a dreamlike state of semi-reality. Babadook is in many ways a modern day take on a gothic fairy tale, and the films use of shadow to cast doubt around every corner of the creaking, claustrophobic house only adds to the heightened sense of isolation and unease that the film’s thematic elements have already established. Babadook might not make the seasoned horror aficionado jump out of his/her seat, but the way it is able to establish a sense of dread and just kind of crescendo it until its climax is arguably more effective.

In short, it’s easy to see why Babadook writer/director Jennifer Kent is receiving a lot of praise for crafting an intelligent and genuinely affecting horror film in a market that not only allowed Ouija to happen, but rewarded it with a $50 million return. Again, I am taken back to the group of teenagers whose conversation I chose to plagiarize for this review. The sad reality is, if Babadook does turn out to be a financial success, we’ll almost certainly have to chalk it up to the way it was marketed to look like another cut-rate haunted house movie. Its 98% approval rating among critics will mean nothing once the word of mouth gets out that the film is “slow” and “boring” (also “fake and gay”), and at the end of the day, Babadook will likely serve as another example of why we can’t have nice things. There very well may be an audience for slow-burning, genuine horror movies like Babadook, but it never seems to be as big as the one for a movie about, say, a haunted cardboard game.

Showtime is still prepping the documentary Kobe Bryant’s Muse, which they assure the public will present “a side of Kobe Bryant that the public has never seen before.” One could only presume that means a decent side, a side aware that other humans exist and deserve respect, a side that honors the institution of marriage, a side that passes the ball when it realizes its broken-down body is not what it used to be. That kind of side.

(I don’t like Kobe Bryant very much.)

And I’m sure the portrayal of the star Laker will be fair and even-handed, since it will be produced by Kobe Bryant himself.

Stephen Espinoza of Showtime offers this cryptic pull quote to Variety:

“Rarely has a superstar athlete afforded this type of access and engaged in this level of self-reflection during his playing career. Throughout his NBA career, Kobe has been an intensely private person, so in many ways this film is the antithesis of the Kobe Bryant that the public has come to know.”

If Kobe is exercising self-reflection during tantrums like this, then I’m Helena Bonham Carter.

Gosh, even the title of this documentary is painfully romantic. If, for any reason, you want to spend more time with this person, you can tune in to the documentary premiere on Showtime in February.

The post Review: ‘Alive Inside’ appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
By Jared Jones

There are countless phrases we have used to describe our connection to music over the centuries. Tolstoy called it “the shorthand of emotion.” Nietzsche claimed that without it, “life would be pointless.” Bob Marley believed that “when it hits you, you feel no pain.” Music is freeing. It’s nostalgic. It’s the most powerful force in world, the universal language, and if Alive Inside is to be believed, a potential cure for mental illness — or at least, a momentary escape from it.

Even as I write this review, I’m listening to music — “The Host of Seraphim” by Dead Can Dance, if you were wondering. I usually do when writing reviews. Music honest-to-God helps me power through these things, restoring the smallest semblance of balance to the chaotic clusterfuck usually going on inside my head (I blame the Twitter for my adult onset ADHD). And it’s this medically unexplainable phenomenon that Alive Inside posits can actually be used to restore memory in those who have lost it.

Following social worker and founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, Dan Cohen, as he attempts to demonstrate the power of music in nursing homes and mental health facilities across the country, Alive Inside is a documentary with a simple message and simpler execution: Music can not only help combat memory loss in geriatric Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, but potentially even restore sanity. The vast majority of the debut film from writer/director Michael Rossato-Bennett features Cohen putting his theory into practice, applying the simple combination of an iPod and some headphones to various nursing home patients and watching the transformation take place.

In most cases, the results are almost immediate — like watching a Southern baptist preacher raise a crippled child to his feet through sheer force of will. Alzheimer’s patients suddenly recall long lost memories of their childhood to the tiniest detail. Closed-off schizophrenics smile for the first time in years and break into full-on dance routines in a matter of minutes. Rossato-Bennett simply sits back and watches as a person’s soul is revitalized, and it is in these moments of spiritually awakening (or what Cohen calls “the quickening”) that Alive Inside is most powerful.

They key to these audio-injected souls (to borrow a phrase from Mnemic) is simple stimulation. Anyone who has ever visited a nursing home has likely seen the effects of what a psychotropic drug-dependent system of treatment so often does to the already fragile minds of the elderly. With the number of senior citizens suffering from mental ailments in America set to double in the next decade, nursing homes have become increasingly overcrowded and understaffed. The result has been the institutionalization of mental health facilities nationwide — a clinical, unnecessarily expensive and inhumane system in which far too many people are forced to live out their final years, often against their will. While the medications so often pushed on senior citizens may help quell some of their symptoms, nothing they are prescribed provides them with the stimulation that all living beings need in order to achieve happiness. Cohen is attempting to bring the humanity back into healthcare, and watching these transformations could turn a hardened atheist into a Sunday churchgoer.

That is not to say that Alive Inside doesn’t suffer from any missteps, however. Rossato-Bennett’s presentation of the material is scatterbrained and tonally jarring at times, especially in his own moments of narration. Rather than allow most of these “quickenings” to play out in real time, Bennett often compresses them into montages or speaks in well-worn platitudes atop them. “Music touches us all,” while being an earnest statement, doesn’t so much add to the narrative already being established on camera as much as it unnecessarily reinforces it. It’s a documentary asking you to simply see, which makes the moments where it opts to tell you what’s happening all the more distracting. It’s a small complaint for an otherwise beautifully put together film, but a noticeable one nonetheless.

Alive Inside, to use another cliched phrase, is the kind of eye-opening experience that will give you a whole new appreciation for the healing capabilities of what many would consider a “new-age” form of therapy. If Patch Adams took off the red nose and picked up a guitar, he would be Dan Cohen, essentially, and as a performing musician myself, Alive Inside almost perfectly illustrated the unexplainable reasons that first led me to pick up an instrument (besides the chicks), and why I remain so passionate about music to this day. Music is the lifeforce of humanity, something that is quite literally in our blood (what is a heartbeat if not a base-level techno riff in need of an unce?), and Alive Inside demonstrates that we have still yet to understand how powerful it can truly be.

There were a lot of names in contention for roles in the second season of HBO crime anthology True Detective. We talked about once here. Another time here. Then we did it over here. This was about something else entirely. Just kidding. It was about True Detective casting. Just like this was.

This one especially was. This one was just about Elisabeth Moss. But specifically her consideration for being cast in True Detective, so it counts. AND HERE. THIS ONE AS WELL. HOLY SHIT, IT’S NOT STOPPING.

It’s over. It’s…it’s over. Here’s a link to a funny YouTube video to cleanse yourself.

But during all our digging, research and pursuit of red herrings, the truth was right under our collective, ignorant nose. The lynchpin of the sophomore season of the hit show is none other than “Jessie’s Girl” writer and performer Rick Springfield.

And we’ve got an objective, non-biased source to back it up:

Rick Springfield.

Anyone who was considered about a drop in quality can sleep easy tonight, because Rick Springfield assures us the script is “great.”

Man, all that fuss over nothing.

Let’s knock out the “Jessie’s Girl”/True Detective jokes quickly, shall we?

 • In which the detectives seek out the truth to a murder, and also where they can find a woman like that.
 • The protagonist is watching him with that body. A DEAD BODY.
 • I just know it.
 • In the season finale, Taylor Kitsch manages to define what changes (Thanks for meeting me more than halfway on that one.)
 • “Jessie’s Girl” on vinyl is also a flat circle.

Christopher Lee, who hands down has the best voice in the geriatric death metal set, is back with his third rocking tribute to Hell and the holidays. “Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing” is available on iTunes and wherever drudgy metal holiday anthems from Dracula are sold.

Hot Tub Time Machine, when it first came out, read like one of those one-note Snakes on a Plane gimmicks that would be good for a laugh, then forgettable. So going back to the well for a sequel sounded ominous. Happy to report that, upon seeing the trailer for this sequel, I was wrong…

DEAD wrong.

(Not really. Just regular wrong.)

The sequel fulfills an urge we always have with time-travel movies: To see the protagonists use the mechanism for crazy personal gain. It’s perhaps the only highlight of Back to the Future 2, aside from Hoverboards, and this movie seems dedicated to that idea.We shared a different trailer back at Comic-Con, but this one seems to give a better snapshot of the film.

We then go into the future with these guys, only to see that things hadn’t worked out as they’d hoped. So they time-travel around trying to fix what went wrong.

Oh, and it’s got Adam Scott.

Pixar hasn’t made a whole lot of noise recently, announcing some sequels for Toy Story and Nemo, but that’s about it. It turns out they have a pretty big iron in the fire with Inside Out, which hits theaters next summer. We gave you the teaser a few months back, and it shed some light on the premise.

There’s a girl, and her emotions and thoughts are represented as bickering little characters inside her head. It’s simple, it’s poignant, and it’s something that Pixar should be able to knock out of the park given their track record. We also get insight into her parents’ thoughts. Everyone’s really.

It’s worth the price of admission just to see a mechanism in the father’s brain bellow, “Sir! Reporting high levels of sass!” in response to his daughter’s attitude.

Just watch the trailer. You’ll be glad you did.

The world has been wondering what institute of learning 23 Jump Street would transplant Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum for their next round of dick shooting. Grad school? Medical school? How about they skip school entirely and the ranks of the Men in Black? Turns out it could be the last one.

The Sony email leaks have revealed a lot of telling and hilarious details about the studio. Adam Sandler got called bad names. Angelina Jolie got called bad names. Joel McHale got a good deal on a Sony TV. But strangest of all, Sony execs have been working with Jonah Hill to merge the Jump Street films with their dusty old Men in Black franchise. An idea that sucks at first glance until you consider it’s our best chance to see Channing Tatum trip balls with a talking pug.

“jump street merging with mib i think that’s clean and rad and powerful,” said an email from Hill. However, it sounded more like he was describing some really good cocaine. Besides, you’d think he got his fill of destroying alien penises in The Watch. (Wall Street Journal)

After announcing that he would be taking his American Horror Story-style anthology into the realm of American crime, it was decided that the first story Ryan Murphy would tell would be O.J. Simpson’s story of murder and the lengthy trial that followed. Now we have an actor to play Simpson in American Crime Story, and it’s none other than Cuba Gooding Jr.

An inspired choice? Eh. Not really. Adequate? Yeah, probably. I’m not convinced that a lesser-known actor couldn’t have done a better job selling us on the story and character. Audiences will likely be sitting around waiting for O.J. to burst out with “Show me the money!” at some point, which would actually be pretty great, though not true to the story.

Sarah Paulson will be playing prosecutor Marcia Clark, who was believed to have bungled a pretty sure-fire case.

We’ll give it a whirl, but nothing too exciting in this casting news. It’s a shame they couldn’t have just gotten O.J.

Shawn Levy, a guy who was able to make THREE Night at the Museum films without even pulling a muscle, has said “no mas” when it comes to adapting the open-source, open-world game Minecraft into a film.

For those unfamiliar…I’m not even going to try to explain Minecraft. It’s a crude eight bit world of…stuff in which you build buildings, plant stuff, and basically just waste a lot of time. There’s not much in the way of a plot. But it’s REALLY popular, so naturally, a movie adaptation is on everyone’s mind nonetheless.

But no longer Levy’s as he’s off to direct Melissa McCarthy as Tinkerbell, a proposition that sounds no less difficult, but is easier to wrap your head around than this Minecraft nonsesnse.

First, the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic had David Fincher bail on it, only to be replaced by Danny Boyle. Then Matt Damon and Leo DiCaprio bailed on it, only to have Christian Bale step up (maybe not in that order – details aren’t clear). Then Sony said that this was all too much, then THEY bailed on it. So this piece I wrote summing up the progress pretty much went to shit.

So, it looks like no one’s been that fond of stepping up and making this film, which has been written by Aaron Sorkin. But, current star of Sorkin’s The Newsroom (at least for one more episode) Jeff Daniels is rumored to be stepping up.

Now, is Jeff Daniels the same box office gold as DiCaprio, Damon, or Bale? No.

Does he look like Steve Jobs? Only a little bit. But that doesn’t matter because Jeff Daniels would be playing former Apple CEO and Jobs foil John Sculley.

Is he a living breathing human that showing interest in this film? Yes.

So sign him up.

If you’ve ever watched an episode of The Kardashians or E! News Daily and just wished that Los Angeles would collapse into itself, we’ve got some good news: The trailer for San Andreas is here, and the whole damn city is gonna hit the proverbial fan. As the name suggests, San Andreas is about a really, really, really big earthquake.

Though the film stars The Rock, I think it’s unlikely that even he will be able to protect an entire city from a geological event. But I’m sure that won’t stop him from taking his shirt off and trying.

It actually looks like a pretty fun action flick, and the ones where entire cities are destroyed are normally a lot better than the ones in which entire cities are ALMOST destroyed, so let’s all watch LA burn.

Mark Wahlberg is pretty forthcoming about the fact that he was kind of a jerk when he was younger. He was arrested on several occasions, and incarcerated for assaulting two Vietnamese men in Boston in 1988. It was revealed that he’s petitioning the Mass. powers that be for a pardon so that he can demonstrate to others that he is both a new man, and so that others who have run afoul of the law can see that there is hope to redemption.

But now, it’s becoming clearer that there’s a more tangible reason. He wants to clear his record so he can be an LAPD reserve officer. He wouldn’t be commissioned, but he would still be able to do cop stuff like arrest people and plant evidence and beat black guys.

I saw the kind of cop he was in The Departed, and…ugh. Too mean.
