Comic-Con 2012: M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘After Earth’ Promo Video

Although M. Night Shyamalan, Will Smith, and Jaden Smith were apparently too bush to make it to San Diego for Comic-Con this year, Sony still made an effort to get the word out about their upcoming collaboration After Earth. The panel consisted of a lot of behind the scenes footage and video interviews, including one where Shyamalan says he’s taking a “documentary”-like approach to the material, about a far-off future Earth.

There was also this promo video, which lays out the alternate history that will be explored in the movie. There’s not any actual footage from the movie or any looks at the cast, but it’s pretty cool. I’ll go on the record and say this is the best Facebook-themed movie teaser since The Social Network. (The Playlist)

Farmers Insurance has a new ad featuring J.K. Simmons and his usual TV crew dressed up as characters from The Avengers. What does Farmers Insurance have to do with the The Avengers? I’m not 100% sure, and watching the ad didn’t help, but there was a cool explosion. Plus, it’s good to see Simmons, a veteran of the original Spider-Man films, keeping it in the Marvel family. DC is for losers.

In honor of the release of American Reunion, which hits theaters April 6th, we’ve put together this reenactment of the original film’s most famous scene. Most movie press conferences tend to be pretty dull. That’s why we called in DJ Flula. Rather than asking the cast of Jeff Who Lives At Home a bunch of boring questions about the film’s craft services table, he sampled various sounds and phrases from the interview and turned it into a techno song. How did it turn out? Well, I can say without hyperbole that it’s the greatest techno song sampled from a movie press junket that I’ve ever heard. But watch for yourself.

Interview: Tim Heidecker, Eric Wareheim, And A Bag Of Magic Mushrooms (Video)

Normally I dread doing interviews for press junkets. Why should I bother showing up to ask stupid questions that have already been asked a dozen times before, especially when bigger outlets are going to drown out anything interesting I might manage to glean. But when I was asked if I wanted to take part in an interview with Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim of Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie (in theaters March 2nd), I couldn’t pass up the chance. And it went about as I expected.

Right off the bat, the pair seemed bored with my questions (not that I blame them, especially considering I was the second-to-last interview of the day). So rather than continue out of common courtesy like a normal person would do, the pair launched into a bizarre improv scene for an audience of one (me) in which Eric acted like he had been spiked with magic mushrooms, Tim acted like nothing was wrong, and I was left to continue asking questions like the asshole I am.

On the one hand, it was extremely awkward and intimidating to have a giant like Eric Wareheim sitting doggie style on a chair staring at me with crazy eyes while his partner eyed me with contempt. But on the other hand, it turned out better than any interview I’ve ever attempted, and probably better than any interview I’ll ever attempt. So thanks, Tim and Eric.

And for anyone who actually cares about what was discussed:

Robert Loggia was already familiar with their work since he had been on Tom Goes To The Mayor.
David Liebe Hart is not homeless, but certainly has a “drifter quality.”
The pair had to make some tough choices about which Awesome Show! regulars to use, and they hope to use those who were left out in future projects.
There will never be a Tom Goes To The Mayor movie because they have no interest in it.
For the most part, their rabid fan base has been respectful of their privacy, and has not crossed any lines.
Tim has no idea who would win a shrimp eating contest between the two, and doesn’t care because it’s a stupid question (Thanks to the guys at Double Viking for suggesting that one).

As the title indicates, this video is a shot-for-shot stop-motion recreation of the intro to Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Why? Because it’s awesome, that’s why. It’s about 1000 times more watchable than Crystal Skull. Besides, you don’t need an excuse to combine one of the greatest films of all time with the magic of stop-motion animation. In fact, I’m kind of pissed that this didn’t happen sooner, and if it did, I’m pissed that I never saw it. At any rate, Kudos to Jeff Gurwood for his Indy Animation creation. Huzzah!

Yes, there have been many Star Wars/Jabba the Hut parodies, but to my knowledge, none of them have featured Wilford Brimley. And that, my friends, is a game changer.
