The best young film directors of today are poised to be the movie masters of tomorrow. As Hollywood passes the torch to this younger generation, these young filmmakers pay homage to their forebearers while blazing new paths in the future of cinema. Generally speaking, directing is an old man's game, but these youngsters have the talent to enjoy longstanding careers.

  1. Darren Aronofsky This young film director has carved out a successful career with small, intimate and critically acclaimed films. From the groundbreaking “Pi” to the award-winning “The Wrestler” to the critically acclaimed “Black Swan,” Aronofsky has made nothing be great movies. Even the criminally underrated “The Fountain” is a masterpiece in its own right.

  2. J.J. Abrams Getting his start in television with hits such as “Alias” and “Lost,” this young film director has successfully gapped the bridge to movies with the successful “Star Trek” reboot and a solid effort on “Mission: Impossible III.” Abrams is shaping up to becoming a young Steven Spielberg with a producing credit on the monster movie “Cloverfield” as well as the Spielberg backed directing effort on “Super 8.”

  3. Duncan Jones Son of the famous singer David Bowie, this young director has proved a major talent in a different field than his father’s. With his debut feature, “Moon,” Jones provided one of the great science fiction films of the decade and an excellent homage to its predecessors, such as “Alien” and “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

  4. Zack Snyder Best known for the visionary and violent “300,” Snyder has showcased his steady hand as a young director. From his polished remake of the classic “Dawn of the Dead” to doing the unthinkable in adapting the un-adaptable comic book “Watchmen,” this young director has a great track record, landing him directing duties on the “Superman: Man of Steel” reboot.

  5. Neill Blomkamp In 2009, this young director made the Academy Award nominated “District 9,” his debut feature. Essentially a remake of a series of short films that he directed, this film proved his skill in directing a science fiction film with dynamic, involving characters. He even had a shot at directing the “Halo” movie before it fell apart due to financing. He’s definitely a young talent that will be here to stay.
