10 Most Famous Indian Actors

Saturday, July 23 by Mason Kaho

The 10 most famous Indian actors includes some of the most popular movie stars in the world. The Bollywood movie industry has boomed for decades, and the massive population of India means that big film stars there have huge followings. Big on dancing, singing, and melodrama, Indian movies are great fun, and these are some of the best leading men India has to offer.

  1. Shahrukh Khan. With a fan base potentially in the billions, Khan is sometimes called the biggest movie star in the world and is certainly one of the most famous Indian actors. Most recently he starred in the mega hit “Om Shanti Om,” but Khan has been in other hugely popular films, along the way collecting thirteen Filmfare Awards.
  2. Amitabh Bachchan. Bachchan is one of the true legends of Bollywood, one of the most famous Indian actors ever. After his career began in the early 1970s, he went to collect a record number of Filmfare Award nominations, became a producer and television personality, and was even a member of parliament for a few years.
  3. Rishi Kapoor. One of the grandfathers of Indian cinema, not only is he one of the most famous Indian actors, but he launched a family that is well known in the world of entertainment as well. An actor, director, and producer, two of his films were recognized at the Cannes Film Festival and his last name is synonymous with great movies.
  4. Amir Khan. Khan began his career as a child actor in the 1970s and has since gone on to be one of the most recognizable faces in all of Bollywood. In addition to an acting resume that includes several successful movies, he is also a director and has a production company.
  5. Dharmendra. Often considered a living legend and a national treasure, Dharmendra is perhaps the most famous Indian actor to ever live. He starred in nearly 250 films during his acting career, which began in the 1960s, and in 1997 he received a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
  6. Sunil Dutt. Dutt began acting in the 1950s and in 1963 collected his first Filmfare Best Actor Award. Acting into the 1990s, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995, and was a noted politician, serving in five consecutive parliaments.
  7. Sanjay Dutt. Sunil’s son, Sanjay is himself a big presence in Bollywood cinema. He has been nominated for three Filmfare Awards, winning one, and also has made himself known for humanitarian efforts to fight hunger and malnutrition.
  8. Sanjeev Kumar. Kumar was a very likable and popular figure in Indian cinema, and known for his versatility and range. He acted in the very popular “Sholay” and “Trishul,” and during his career collected three Filmfare Awards. He perhaps would have won more, but died a young man, at 47.
  9. Govinda. Nominated for eleven Filmfare Awards throughout his career, Govinda became a superstar in the 90s, appearing in some of that decade’s most successful films. Typically playing in comedies, he also gained notoriety in romantic films, often appearing opposite the actress Neelam.
  10. Dilip Kumar. The third person on this list to parlay his fame into an elected role in parliament, Kumar is certainly one of the most famous Indian actors. He won a record eight Filmfare Awards for best actor and dominated Indian cinema in the '50s and '60s.

What a crap article. You put SRK in the list above Amitabh. Anyone who has lived in the era of 1970s and 80′s, know it well What Amitabh is really. Amitabh is class apart from the names you put here and comparing him with Shahrukh Khan is an absolute insult to the legend. Amitabh was officially judged as the biggest actor of the millennium by BBC, Lincoln Centre, NY conferred him with title of Greatest Ever Actor. This man commands 4 national awards for acting, which is the biggest official honour form government of India, he is conferred with one of the biggest civilian awards of Morocco, South Africa, Afghanistan, France, UK for the respective nations.

But you not only chose to compare him with Shahrukh khan but put his name below him! Go to any Indian’s home just ask whom they like more SRK or AB. SRK has not got even a single National Award for his 20 years of carrer while Amitabh got National Award for his very first performance. Amitabh is the most versatile actor who did all kind of roles with equal perfection but SRK was limited to only romantic movies. During haydays of Amitabh none dared to count who is at no1 or 10 as Amitabh’s fellow actors themselves would say that he is “One Man Industry”! But SRK even after 20 years of career is not considered a the darling no.1 actor of India and more people like Salman Khan, Amir Khan and Hrithik Roshan than him. Ajay Devgun has got 2 national awards and commands better box office record than SRK. Even at this age of ~70, Amitabh has more convincing power than SRK or any star in ad and TV world. While Shahrukh Khan’s stint to TV has been terrible with three consecutive flops KBC3, Panchvi Paas and the forgetable one on Pogo, Amitabh gave TV biggest successful shows and respectibility with all shows he did on TV, KBC1,2 4( SRK was removes and Amitabh was called back), BigBoss…all were the highest TRP rankers during their time!

So please either ammend your shallow article or throw it in crap. world knows what is SRK and how bad is his respect level. His stardom is managed with media not in actual otherwise he would not have flopped terribly on television.

Neeraj U seem to have snorted some dose. No sane man would talk what you have done. I have put data to back my claim. You also put data to back your argument. SRK is popular only on creepy NRI culture, who have nothing to do with India!
If he has got so many awards then why don’t you name them here. Sametime why dont you urself visit the Wiki of these two stars and compare exactly about the titles and awards status. If he so good actor, who not he got the most important recognition: The National Award…in past 15 years of his film career, world knows he has purchased all private awards like Filmfare, who has no reputation, no credibility. World knows how he buys awards. Not a single government award or any reputed organizational award has been given to him. U bloody talk here about MNIK, who did not even get a good critical acclaim in any genuine review or award function. I don’t know in which cinema hall MNIK is still running..may be in ur home theature…as no man we head would ever like such a junk movie and overdose of hamming. Ur Cameron statement is also a big lie. If one goes through ur entire comment, it really looks some mentally retard has written the entire comment with as usual typical SRK fan signature language..suxx, shame, piece of crap, rubbish,….do ur homework and get data first to back ur claim. Fact is that..SRK is not even eligible actor and putting his name under such heading and that too with Amitabh is an insult for the field. That man ruled for 40 years, and enjoyed a stardom that none can imagine of… and here u compare him with someone whose stardom itself is media managed and despite of 20 years of heydays of career struggling to prove himself and competing pathetically with coactors like Salman, Amir, Hrithik and Ajay Devgun. His popularity is much lesser than other current days stars like Salman and Amir who gather more google hits than him. This man dances are marriage functions for petty amount of money, instead of concentrating to improve his acting skills he stored black money in Dubai and run real estate business there… not an inch of class and absolutely not even a single movie where his performance got critical acclaim!

And add the following movies to SRK career of 15 years, to know what he is upto:
    Guddu,
    Ram Jaane,
    Zamana Deewani
    Army
    Koyla
    English Babu Desi Mem
    Maya Memsab
    Anjaam
    Darling ye hai India
    HumTumhare Hain Sanam
    Swades
    Josh
    Badshah
    Duplicate
    Paheli
    Dil Hai Hindustani
    Hey Ram
    Yess Boss
    Asoka
    Ye Lamhe Judai Ke
    Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
    Billu
    Don(duplicate one)
    Pardes
    Trimurti
    Chahat
    King Uncle
    Dil Ashna Hai
    Idiot
In his 15 years film career or so..he has given these many flops and crappy movies. This is truth about this media manged superstar Shahrukh Khan.
