The 10 most famous Indian actors includes some of the most popular movie stars in the world. The Bollywood movie industry has boomed for decades, and the massive population of India means that big film stars there have huge followings. Big on dancing, singing, and melodrama, Indian movies are great fun, and these are some of the best leading men India has to offer.
Shahrukh Khan. With a fan base potentially in the billions, Khan is sometimes called the biggest movie star in the world and is certainly one of the most famous Indian actors. Most recently he starred in the mega hit “Om Shanti Om,” but Khan has been in other hugely popular films, along the way collecting thirteen Filmfare Awards.
Amitabh Bachchan. Bachchan is one of the true legends of Bollywood, one of the most famous Indian actors ever. After his career began in the early 1970s, he went to collect a record number of Filmfare Award nominations, became a producer and television personality, and was even a member of parliament for a few years.
Rishi Kapoor. One of the grandfathers of Indian cinema, not only is he one of the most famous Indian actors, but he launched a family that is well known in the world of entertainment as well. An actor, director, and producer, two of his films were recognized at the Cannes Film Festival and his last name is synonymous with great movies.
Amir Khan. Khan began his career as a child actor in the 1970s and has since gone on to be one of the most recognizable faces in all of Bollywood. In addition to an acting resume that includes several successful movies, he is also a director and has a production company.
Dharmendra. Often considered a living legend and a national treasure, Dharmendra is perhaps the most famous Indian actor to ever live. He starred in nearly 250 films during his acting career, which began in the 1960s, and in 1997 he received a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
Sunil Dutt. Dutt began acting in the 1950s and in 1963 collected his first Filmfare Best Actor Award. Acting into the 1990s, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995, and was a noted politician, serving in five consecutive parliaments.
Sanjay Dutt. Sunil’s son, Sanjay is himself a big presence in Bollywood cinema. He has been nominated for three Filmfare Awards, winning one, and also has made himself known for humanitarian efforts to fight hunger and malnutrition.
Sanjeev Kumar. Kumar was a very likable and popular figure in Indian cinema, and known for his versatility and range. He acted in the very popular “Sholay” and “Trishul,” and during his career collected three Filmfare Awards. He perhaps would have won more, but died a young man, at 47.
Govinda. Nominated for eleven Filmfare Awards throughout his career, Govinda became a superstar in the 90s, appearing in some of that decade’s most successful films. Typically playing in comedies, he also gained notoriety in romantic films, often appearing opposite the actress Neelam.
Dilip Kumar. The third person on this list to parlay his fame into an elected role in parliament, Kumar is certainly one of the most famous Indian actors. He won a record eight Filmfare Awards for best actor and dominated Indian cinema in the '50s and '60s.
