10 Best Older Male Actors

The best older male actors in Hollywood have survived the test of time, remaining relevant well into their sixties, seventies and eighties. These men have won countless awards and remain solid actors today, as they reach their twilight years.

  1. Jack Nicholson. Born in 1937, Jack Nicholson remains one of the most respected of the older male actors. He has earned twelve Oscar nominations as of 2011 and is tied for most wins by a male with three. His wins came for performances in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Terms of Endearment” and “As Good as It Gets.”
  2. Clint Eastwood. Born in 1930, Clint Eastwood has mostly stepped away from acting roles to concentrate on directing movies but remains one of the best older male actors of all time. While Eastwood has never won an Oscar for his acting, he has won two for directing.
  3. Al Pacino. Born in 1940, Al Pacino built an amazing body of work as a younger actor and remains known as one of the best older male actors in the history of the industry. During his distinguished career, which includes “The Godfather” trilogy, Pacino only won one Oscar, for the 1993 film “Scent of a Woman.”
  4. Robert De Niro. Born in 1943, Robert De Niro has not appeared in many quality movies recently but his body of work rivals any older male actors working today. De Niro has been nominated for six Oscars, winning two for “The Godfather, Part II” and “Raging Bull.”
  5. Michael Douglas. Born in 1944, Michael Douglas is a second generation actor who matched his father’s career over time. Douglas began his career in Hollywood as a television producer but soon became a successful actor. He won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in the 1987 film “Wall Street.”
  6. Michael Caine. Born in 1933, much of Michael Caine’s career has been spent in supporting roles. Recently a new generation of film fans was introduced to him through Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” films. Caine has been nominated for an Oscar in every decade since 1960, winning twice.
  7. Dustin Hoffman. Born in 1937, Dustin Hoffman has been acting since 1960, developing a career as one of the best older male actors in Hollywood. Hoffman won two Oscars over his career, one for “Kramer vs. Kramer” and the second for “Rain Man.”
  8. Donald Sutherland. Born in 1935, Donald Sutherland is still going strong today, starring in the Jason Statham action movie “The Mechanic” in 2011. Over his illustrious career, Sutherland has appeared in critically acclaimed movies such as “MASH” as well as genre favorites like the “Invasion of the Bodysnatchers” remake in 1978.
  9. Morgan Freeman. Born in 1937, Morgan Freeman has built a respectable career as one of the best older male actors in Hollywood. He is diverse, appearing in action movies like “Batman Begins” while starring in prestige pictures like “Invictus.” He has received five Oscar nominations, winning for “Million Dollar Baby.”
  10. Robert Duvall. Born in 1931, Robert Duvall is one of the most critically acclaimed of the older male actors working in Hollywood today. He has appeared in some of the greatest movies of all time including “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “The Godfather,” “MASH,” “Network” and “Apocalypse Now.” He has received six Oscar nominations, winning for “Tender Mercies.”
