Pineapple Express

POSTED BY Max Powers | MONDAY AUGUST 4 AT 2:55 PDT

Behind the massive success of the Judd Apatow’s media empire is one simple little formula. Make good movies for males, about males. You would be hard pressed to find an example of actual dude conversation more accurate than flicks like Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin; it’s funny because it’s true. If you trace the careers of Seth Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg, integral figures in Apatow’s group who’s teenage years were immortalized in Superbad, then Pineapple Express is a logical stop along the way. Start pouring millions of dollars into the hands of guys like Seth and Evan, and you are bound to see some of the things we would all do were we given massive movie deals with major studios. Car chases, fire balls, blood spray, titties, and hella weed. There’s no shortage in Pineapple. Taking that often honest look at the modern male to the extremes of Hollywood, the story follows the pairing of pothead Dale Denton (Seth) and his pothead pot dealer Saul Silver (James Franco), fleeing from the assaults of a band of thugs led by a cop whom Seth has seen murder a man. Within the offerings of a full-on action movie, It’s the classic tale of “is this actually happening, or am I just really, really, REALLY high?” The answer is a resounding yes.
