The Day the Earth Stood Still

POSTED BY | MONDAY AUGUST 11 AT 7:49 PDT

The original version of this flick came out way back in 1951, which, in Hollywood's eyes, makes it way overdue for a remake. The plot has Keanu Reeves playing an alien messenger that has come to tell us earthlings that we're about to have our intestines handed to us by some unfriendly space-types. Unlike the original, it's sure to be a big-budget blockbuster, which will inevitably annoy some nerds to the point of a nervous breakdown. At least they have Jennifer Connolly to help ease their pain.

Studio: 20th Century Fox

Rating: PG-13

Release date: 12/12/08

I was listening to an episode of This American Life where they break down step-by-step what has happened in the financial markets over the past few months that has made hoards of analysts and traders literally shit their pants. Check it out, it’s mind blowing. The idea that our markets would just freeze up and stop working is something that trusted names in economics are saying is a reality.  The consequences would be disastrous. Companies would stop making stuff. Millions of people would lose their jobs.  Industrial food production would grind to a halt. We could potentially see a mini-apocalypse as chaos spread around the globe.  And what brought on end of days? Terrorists? Nuclear mutual annihilation? Plague? Nope: friggin home loans. More...

Thanks to crap like Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds, I've learned my lesson about getting excited for remakes of classic sci-fi. I wasn't overly excited by the trailer and now these images have me even less excited. The big attack marble and the killer fog just aren't doing it for me. More...
