In a recent live conversation in Los Angeles, Larry David said, after eight seasons, and a lot of other competing projects, he’s just not sure if he’s got the ability or time to crank out good Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes. He’s spending some time on Broadway, and is notorious for putting out the show on his own schedule, ignoring the pleas of his fan base.

BUT, this isn’t a “no.” David said publicly, ““I feel bad that I don’t have shows for them, and I haven’t given up the hope,” so while we may not be getting any new awkwardness soon, we may get some in the VERY distant future.

Variety actually gives a pretty fun rundown of the chat, which featured attendees giving him positive heckles, asking him to follow them back on Twitter, and a bunch of other inane shit that would drive HBO Larry David crazy.

Acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson isn’t known for his upbeat, fast-paced films. Sure, Boogie Nights was funny, but in a really, really dark setting. Up next for the director is Inherent Vice, the widely-praised novel by Thomas Pynchon. In it, we follow around a mutton-chopped Joaquin Phoenix as he…does something. I didn’t pay too much attention because I’m actually really excited about this film and don’t want it spoiled.

Which goes against my duties as someone who reports on movies, so let me meet you halfway:

The film stars Phoenix, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, and Owen Wilson. It looks like it could be classified as a “caper” but I think we all know Anderson a little better than that. There will be gravitas. And probably blood.

Take a look if you don’t hold the surprise as sacred as I do.

If you thought that you were completely safe and secure dancing on the grave of the video-rental giant that charged you more in late fees than you ever did in actual rentals, think again. After the vast majority of the franchise had shuttered last November, we’ve learned that zombie Blockbusters (not “zombie blockbusters” like World War Z, mind you) continue to sludge along, offering Twizzlers and sold out new releases to select demographics.

Namely, the demographics of Alaska, where 23 of one man’s 26 stores remain. That man is Alan Payne, and the reason he says he’s still in business is that people can’t afford to binge-watch TV shows online. I guess that means that they either can’t afford Netflix for $8 bucks, or they can’t afford Internet. I’m guessing it’s the latter because I can’t imagine renting a season of Lost at a zombie Blockbuster is cheaper than $8. But what the hell do I know? I live in Los Angeles where a cup of coffee costs $6.

They also exist in several other rural areas (lending credence to the “expensive internet” argument) and El Paso, where people probably just make odd decisions about thing like this because they don’t know any better.

To be cleared, these are franchised, and only license the name, so the beast is largely still dead. Still. Don’t poke it with a stick.

Netflix continues its migration upstream to original content. Well, latching on to a sequel that had already been greenlighted by The Weinstein Company might not be “original content,” but it’s close enough. It certainly will force people subscribe to Netflix if they want to watch the film. The proper name of the film is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Green Legend, which is a pretty cool title.

Deadline is declaring that this isn’t the only feature film that Netflix is working on, but it will likely be the first to hit the service. It’s currently filming in New Zealand, and was doing so prior to the Netflix announcement, so this seems to be more of a distribution deal than a production deal. However, that probably doesn’t mean very much to you, and even less to the guy on his couch that just wants to watch a kung-fu movie with an Oscar pedigree.

Denzel Washington’s Ten Greatest Movie Performances http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/denzel-washingtons-ten-greatest-movie-performances/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/denzel-washingtons-ten-greatest-movie-performances/#comments Tue, 30 Sep 2014 15:03:18 +0000 DustinSeibert http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=265533 Denzel Washington is one of the greatest actors of all time. He done so much worth watching, but these are his 10 best roles.

The post Denzel Washington’s Ten Greatest Movie Performances appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Denzel Washington is arguably the best actor alive. He’s been killing it on the silver screen for four decades (well, really killing it for about three) and even longer on the small screen. No longtime actor’s record is without flaw, but he’s managed to become a living legend without truly spoiling it in the way that Al Pacino and Robert De Niro did by taking numerous embarrassing movie roles late in their careers.

Last week saw the release of his latest film The Equalizer, a film adaptation of the 1980s television show that isn’t too far off from his other Denzel-on-violent-killing-spree-in-the-name-of-a-young-girl film, 2004′s Man on Fire. He’s pushing 60 now, and I’m interested to see what he will do as he crosses into that Robert Redford/Michael Douglas/Marlon Brando era of his career when his famous good looks start to fade and he moves the box office based solely on name recognition and on-screen presence.

It’s hard for me not to recommend just about every film he’s ever done just to see him in action — even that one he did that you’d have to take my mother hostage to force me to watch again. But these are, in no particular order, 10 of his must-sees…the ones that might actually convince me to leave on TNT if they’re being aired, commercials and all.

1. Glory (1989) - Poor Matthew Broderick. He got upstaged by everyone in this Civil War drama, but especially by Denzel Pvt. Trip, a headstrong Union soldier. Undoubtedly he earned his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the scene in which he takes a beating like a G, his stare fixed on Broderick’s Col. Shaw’s, letting out only a single tear. Shivers.

2. Ricochet (1991) – No Denzel fan (or movie buff, for that matter) worth a damn has only Oscar darlings on their list of his favorite movies. Ricochet is, by all accounts, a B-movie, complete with honey-baked ham-style acting from antagonist John Lithgow and a very healthy serving of “Cop Killer”-era Ice-T. Denzel’s overacting as Assistant District Attorney Nick Styles when he’s trying to convince people he was set up for the fall was never going to earn him any Oscar props, but it sure is fun to watch.

3. Malcolm X (1992) – If Black Twitter existed in 1993, it would have likely exploded over the fact that Al Pacino won the Best Actor Oscar for the most overwrought performance of his career over Denzel’s portrayal of Malcolm Little/El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. He got lost in the role and put his own patina on Brother Malcolm while managing to respect the respect the legacy of the man. Unlike most Spike Lee films, this one still stands tall after more than two decades; it also remains the director’s best, most impactful film.

4. He Got Game (1998) - Not a Denzel film that typically falls on critics’ “best of” lists, but a personal favorite because the film deals with a lot of father-son dynamics that tug at my cold, hard heartstrings. Denzel is masterful as a humbled convict looking to get back in good graces with his estranged children and out of prison while he’s at it. However, contrary to a few clearly idiotic opinions, Denzel’s movie son, NBA player Ray Allen, proved that he couldn’t act his way out of a wet paper bag. Like most pro athletes. Say what you will about his filmmaking, but Spike Lee always brought the best out of Denzel.

5. The Hurricane (1999) – Like He Got Game, this is another Denzel vehicle in which the movie surrounding his tremendous performance is decent but ultimately unmemorable. Playing the real-life Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a boxer wrongly convicted of a murder of which was exonerated after 20 years in the pen, Denzel packed on more muscle than he did for any other movie of his career and delivered a quiet, measured performance that should’ve netted him a Best Actor Oscar before Training Day. There was a boatload of controversy regarding the veracity of the film’s events, but how many of you actually believe everything you see in biopics anyway?

On the next page: Denzel plays a trumpet player, a dirty detective, a drunk pilot, a lawyer, and a football coach — and kills ‘em all.

Well, this was unexpected. It turns out that fanboy fave Donald Glover will be making his way from rapping, formerly being on Community, and being “the black guy” in two scenes of Girls to being a big ole’ hunk of USDA Prime beefcake in Magic Mike XXL.

You’re probably wondering what he’s going to do in the film. We have no idea. BUT…he will be joined by Jada Pinkett-Smith and Andie MacDowell, so…

(seriously no idea)

The film will find the stars of the Tampa strip club making a road trip up to Myrtle Beach to do one last blowout strip-thingy. They’ll also be stopping in Savannah and Jacksonville. It doesn’t say anything about Atlanta, which seems weird. Atlanta is like the strip club capitol of the world. Even the McDonald’s in Atlanta have pole dancers.

Maybe Donald Glover will be a general manager of a McDonald’s in the film. That could be a fun turn for him.

The post Kevin Smith Reports That ‘Tusk’ Has Somehow Enabled Him To Make ‘Clerks III’ appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
You know that movie that recently came out, Tusk? The one directed by Kevin Smith that almost no one saw and critics didn’t like? Well, thanks to that set of circumstances, Kevin Smith has now found the money to make Clerks III.

Confused? Yeah, us too.

This is all coming from Smith, who has said that financing is lined up for Clerk III after the Weinstein Company passed last year. The Wrap transcribed Smith’s podcast with what I suppose, in some universe, may pass for an explanation.

“A year and change ago I was desperately trying to get ‘Clerks III’ made for the 20th anniversary and that desperation — I must have reeked of it because I couldn’t f–king find money and shit. But it was ‘Tusk,’ people going ‘Holy f–k, what else do you have?’ and I was like ‘Clerks III’ and they’re like ‘done’. So, everybody that’s like, ‘He failed, he failed,’ I’m like ‘Thank you, I failed into doing ‘Clerks III.’”

TL;DR version: He couldn’t get Clerks III financed, then Tusk, then he could get it financed.

Just because you can get something financed doesn’t mean you SHOULD get something financed, Kevin. I’ve met ACTUAL people who work in convenience stores that are more interesting than the characters in Clerks II.

Of course, if someone who thinks this is a logical explanation of anything may be delusional, so maybe he doesn’t have the money at all. Maybe Kevin Smith died 16 years ago and everything after Dogma was just a dream.

Every few years, a horror film comes along that rises above the glut of cheap scares and trending gimmicks that creates something actually unsettling and authentically scary. Early feedback is that The Babadook is one of those films. Grounded by a deeply personal connection between the characters, the movie focuses on a widow who does not love her child. His behavior worsens with the arrival of a book called The Babadook, that unleashes paranoia within him. Before long, the mother herself grows less skeptical as she starts to see signs of the boy’s fabled monster.

It looks pretty fun. Just don’t get mad at it when there are about a dozen copycat, cash-grab versions.

In Predestination, the Spierig’s adapt the most famous time travel story, Robert A. Heinlein’s “All You Zombies.” The film already screened at SXSW and the reviews were pretty mixed. Many complained that the plot makes no sense. But, please remember that it’s a movie about time travel. Those are filled with paradoxes that defy logic. Someone did. And it’s terrific. In fact, I give it my highest rating ever. Six thumbs up.

If we could get Elizabeth Moss signed on for some Peggy moments in here, that would just up the comedy value. Until the other two leads get announced, maybe we just have big bouncing question marks in half the video. That wouldn’t be annoying.

Stand-up comedian and sometimes-actor Demetri Martin is set to join the HBO drama House of Lies in a multi-episode arc that will have him playing a partner to Don Cheadle‘s Marty. Martin will play an erratic CEO who plays by his own rules.

Of course he will. Nobody wants to see someone playing by other people’s rules. That’s boring.

Martin has starred in Moneyball, Take Me Home Tonight, The Taking of Woodstock, and served as a correspondent on The Daily Show. He’ll join another wacky comedian, Ben Schwartz, on the Showtime series. There’s no way of knowing how straight Martin will have to play his character, though he’s the rare talent that can garner more laughs the more deadpan he is.

The show is entering its fourth season sometime in 2015, which means that there will be even more lies for this house to be built upon.

The post David Fincher Considered ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’, And His Idea Was Too Awesome For Disney appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
David Fincher has never been a guy to toe the company line when it comes to studios. He seems to be a Hollywood outsider who is only accepted because his films are so damn good that they HAVE to get made. So it was a bit of a surprise when he said in an interview with Total Film that he had early discussions to helm Star Wars: Episode VII. Of course, those conversations were short-lived as he realized that he wasn’t the right guy for the job.

It wasn’t cause of a lack of experience. Fincher actually worked on Return of the Jedi in a crew capacity, but that didn’t make up for the fact that he would have probably scared a new generation off of the franchise forever.

In discussing his take on the franchise, here’s what he said:

I always thought of Star Wars as the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters’ folly, the ultimate folly of man… I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it’s kind of gone by Return Of The Jedi.

Oh, man. That’s such a good take on the property. But Disney didn’t wish to acquire a slave franchise when they bought Star Wars, so we’ll just have to wait for Fincher to make his own sci-fi slave film.

The sequel will be London Has Fallen, and it will be about…something in London. Actually, it follows three characters in London for the funeral of the British Prime Minister when they stumble upon a plot to kill EVERY WORLD LEADER.

The stakes literally couldn’t be higher, you guys!

The director of the upcoming London Has Fallen is Babak Najafi. Yeah, I don’t know who he is either. He directed Easy Money II: Hard to Kill. Whatever. He’s replacing director Frederik Bond, who left over the usual “creative differences.”

None of this is terribly encouraging news, but let’s wait for a trailer, shall we?

Lorde, the toddler from New Zealand (ok, she’s like 17) is back with another song for the Hunger Games franchise. In Catching Fire Part 2, she’s giving us “Yellow Flicker Beat.” Give it a listen and see what you think. The song starts off a little dramatic, but then becomes a dance number that is more reminiscent of her album stuff, if not more produced.

Last time around, she gave us a very very very slow version of Tears for Fears “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” that was haunting. This one will make you bob your head a little bit, until we remember that District 12 is gone and WHERE’S GALE?

The Simpsons has built up a lot of steam in the offseason. Their FX marathon was an unequivocal success, last season’s LEGO episode got great ratings, as did last night’s Family Guy episode with the gang. And they built up further buzz by killing off a character. Of course, they didn’t say who, so you had to tune in.

We haven’t tuned in…yet, but we know who died, thanks to Deadline. don’t read if you don’t wanna know…

The death was:

Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky, Krusty’s father. Ugh. That wouldn’t be newsworthy under the best of circumstances. I think most of us figured he was dead. I was hoping for Nelson Muntz or Superintendent Chalmers. But a boy can dream, can’t he?

Krusty himself was in the title of the show, but rest assured, the clown is still alive and well, even though his death would likely have made for a more interesting conversation the day after the episode aired.

This might not have much to do with entertainment per se, but the editor (WHO WON AN EMMY) of Modern Family was recently on a flight behind a drunken mess of a human who eventually got yelled at, made many racist comments, then was met by police once landed.

It was the greatest thing in the world. Well, the second greatest. The greatest was that Modern Family editor Ryan Case had an internet connection so she was able to live Tweet it. You can read the whole thing (I’m not embedding 64 Tweets) on Mashable, but here are a select few gems:

We’ve all been on flights with terrible people, but this one may take the cake. And while it sucked for Ryan Case, it was funny for the rest of us. And the Tweeting was probably cathartic enough for her not to kill the drunken loudmouth.

Keanu Reeves is ready to revisit his glory days. Not only did he tell reporters he’d be open to starring in Speed 3, but he’s also been teasing a third Bill & Ted film for some time. Now, his most excellent companion, Alex Winter, has given an update about the would-be return to San Dimas. He tells Yahoo:

“[Bill & Ted] will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up,” Winter tells us. “It’s really sweet and really f—-ing funny.

“But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It’s not going to feel like a reboot. The conceit is really funny: What if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t?”

“There’s many versions of ourselves in this movie,” he continues. “[It’s] answering the question: ‘What happened to these guys?’ They’re supposed to have done all this stuff, they weren’t the brightest bulbs on the tree, what happened 20 years later? To answer that question in a comedic way felt rich with possibility.”

He also cautions that traction has been slow. It’s difficult to get a movie made on the business side of things and he wishes that they could have done this work in secret. With the prospect of another Bill & Ted sequel out in the open, it drags the fans along and adds the pressure of having their every move watched. While the movie is coming, we don’t know exactly when. There’s no way our kids are going to understand it.

Eight Lessons We Learned From ‘The Cosby Show’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/general/eight-lessons-we-learned-from-the-cosby-show/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/general/eight-lessons-we-learned-from-the-cosby-show/#comments Thu, 25 Sep 2014 20:57:36 +0000 DustinSeibert http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=265334 America's most beloved sitcom has one heck of a back story. Thirty years later, here are a few of the things we took away.

The post Eight Lessons We Learned From ‘The Cosby Show’ appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
This month marks 30 years since the first episode of The Cosby Show aired, on September 20th, 1984. Based in part on Bill Cosby‘s early stand-up routines that focused on his parenting experiences, The Cosby Show remains inimitable; ask anyone who was alive and of television-watching age in the mid-1980s which show mattered the most at the time and you’ll no doubt get the same answer from nearly everyone.

Before he became better known as Mr. Get-Off-My-Lawn, there were quite a few lessons that Cosby wanted us to learn…and a few that he probably didn’t intend for us to. Here are few in both categories:

1. Genetics don’t matter much – Heathcliff and Claire Huxtable had five biological kids, each of whom look like they are products of a sperm donor of some sort. Both parents were chocolate complected, but for some reason their two oldest, Sondra (Sabrina Le Beauf) and Denise (Lisa Bonet), are yellower than a slice of angel food cake; the former actress is of Creole descent and the latter is half-Jewish. What, did Cosby have a hard time finding black actresses that made genetic sense? I know two siblings of the same two parents can come out different shades, but damn, son.

2. Neither do age and continuity, for that matter – Earle Hyman, who played Cliff’s father Russell, is only 10 years older than Cosby in real life, and LaBoeuf is 10 years older than Phylicia Rashad in real life. Sondra was brought in the middle of the first season as the fifth child who’s been away at college, even though Claire and Cliff had a conversation in the pilot explicitly stating that they only had four children. You got some ‘splainin’ to do, Heathcliff.

3. Your parents don’t owe you s*** – The best scenes from The Cosby Show involve teenaged Theo’s (Malcolm Jamal-Warner) interactions with his dad. The character of Theo, and many of their conversations, were based on those Cosby had with his real-life son Ennis, who was murdered in 1997 at age 27. The “regular people” discussion (posted above) is arguably among the best scenes in all of sitcom history, and is certainly still relevant three decades later.

4. You can be successful by ignoring hairy topics – Yes, this is a controversial one. But it’s been argued that part of the reason for the success of the show in the mainstream is related to Cosby’s disregard for portraying African-American sociocultural issues. (Theo may have learned lessons on what it means to be a worthwhile adult, but never about being a black man in America). Whether it was is necessary for Cosby to breach these topics is debatable, but his lack of attention to these issues on his show make perfect sense when taken in context with his future antics.

5. Raven-Symone can get whatever the hell she wants – I mean seriously…would you just look at cute, sassy little Olivia?!? Cosby was on to something when he didn’t hire Raven-Symone following her audition for the 1989 multiple award-winning Oscar darling Ghost Dad, but instead for the show as Denise’s precocious stepdaughter. It jump-started a long and successful television and recording career for the actress, who became one of the highest-paid black entertainers ever, all while successfully avoiding (at least publicly) the familiar trappings of child celebrities. Girl’s got skills.

6. Family dance routines can break out anywhere – Perhaps more unrealistic than the tendency for the Huxtable family to just be chummy with famous black figures like Lena Horne and Dizzy Gillespie is its propensity to break out into carefully choreographed family dance routines. It started with season 1′s “Jitterbug Break,” but it certainly wasn’t the last time music and dance combined for the sake of a fun sequence. This kind of entertainment worked in the 1980s and at the buttcrack dawn of the 1990s, but everyone would roll their eyes in 2014 — part of the reason The Cosby Show hasn’t aged very well.

7. Pissing off the Cos = Bad Idea – It was well-known that Cosby ran a tight ship on his show, making sure his characters were portrayed in a positive light, even if the kids are a bit confused about the way of things. Lisa Bonet wasn’t having it: Though she was one of the show’s most popular characters early on, rumors abound that she was a pain in the ass on the set, arguing with show runners and showing up late. This was apparently what led Cosby to drop her off in the spinoff A Different World. When Bonet and Lenny Kravitz got pregnant with doppelganger/future hottie Zoe, Cosby wasn’t having a pregnant Denise on either show, so her character was sent away to Africa. Also, Carl Anthony Payne II’s Cockroach got the heave-ho after one season, reportedly because he wanted to grow out his hair and Cosby wanted any friend of Theo’s to be clean cut. Way to drive that slave ship, Billy-Boy.

8. Teenagers are atrociously annoying – When we were kids, it was entertaining watching the Cosby kids and all their zip-zany antics. But getting older is to realize just how grating those kids truly were. Rudy was too young and adorable to be obnoxious, and Sondra was too grown and frequently indisposed, but those middle three? Sheesh. Tempestt Bledsoe’s Vanessa takes the cake for having the most punchable Cosby face by a country mile.

Ridley Scott has succeeded where a battalion of Space Marines and Predator have failed. He’s killed the Xenomorph.

Despite revealing the origin of the vicious beast from the Alien franchise at the end of Prometheus, the director has no plans to include it in the upcoming sequel. Or ever again for that matter.

“The beast is done,” Scott tells Yahoo. “Cooked. I got lucky meeting [creature design H.R.] Giger all those years ago. It’s very hard to repeat that…But after four I think it wears out a little bit. There’s only so much snarling you can do. I think you’ve got to come back with something more interesting.”

Good point but does no work to explain the turd omelet that was Prometheus. There are currently 15 scripts in play for the sequel. Let’s hope one of those is a good story that puts the series in league with its predecessors.

Alas, farewell Xenomorph. You were scary and awesome. I hope we can see you onscreen again sometime. Maybe fighting Jason this time.

Disney hasn’t gotten near the acclaim that Pixar has since the two companies split, but Disney hasn’t exactly been sitting on their hands, and that’s perhaps most clear with the upcoming Big Hero Six, which takes a fascinating animation approach and couples it with some characters that are likable and pretty damn funny.

Anyone familiar with Big Hero Six, or it’s last trailer, knows that Beymax, the giant white blob robot, is the star of the show. But this trailer focuses a little more on Hiro, the human protagonist. And while he’s not as funny, he lends an emotional anchor to the movie the way we see in Pixar’s best.

Take a look.

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the casting rumors behind HBO’s True Detective. This week gave us both Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn confirmations, but has left us wanting for knowledge about the other two leads, one male, one female, according to lore. And us.

However, from God’s mouth to our ears (via Variety, of course) comes word that the producers really just want Rachel McAdams. Note that McAdams worked with Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers, but I think we all hope to Christ that wasn’t a consideration for casting her over Elisabeth Moss and the rest of the women in the world.

No confirmation yet, but I’m guessing what True Detective wants, True Detective gets.

Meanwhile, Taylor Kitsch waits on the floor, calling AT&T to ensure that his bill is paid and that he’s able to receive incoming calls.

Here he is, doing his best flat circle impression. It’s not bad, really. PRODUCERS, TAKE NOTE!

Social media giant Twitter has been meeting with studios to determine the best way that both parties can find users passionate about films, then dump a bunch of ads on their heads until they fall to floor, either dead or unconscious.

Ok. Not really. But they are working to target movie ads (disguised as Tweets) to users who tweet often about films. So, in the example used in the THR story, if you tweet about Guardians of the Galaxy, you’ll get future sci-fi movie ad-tweets. Logical. Kinda crappy, but Twitter’s not a charity service.

If you’re all appalled by this news, you should know that such a program has already been in place for TV for a while now. So you’re just some sick little puppet, dancing on the stage of social media already. You just don’t know it.

DANCE, PUPPET! DANCE!

I’m not sure if there’s a big need or demand for an Outkast movie, but that hasn’t stopped Andre 3000 from thinking about one. It’s probably because he just wrapped a Jimi Hendrix biopic, and is thinking about his legacy. Or maybe he was just bored waiting for a flight at the airport, and thinking about casting his own biopic, as we all so often do.

Andre was spot-on in saying that Kevin Hart should play Big Boi, since they’re both about 4’11″, but the choice to play himself is far more…inspired. Dre said to Rolling Stone, the role should go to ”somebody stupid—like Leonardo DiCaprio.”

I’m not sure the way to recruit an actor is by calling him stupid, but I think that Dre was calling the idea stupid more than the actor.

In any event, we’ll be the first to report it if Leo takes the gig. Which should happen when hell freezes over.
