Ordinarily, a person just really wanting something isn’t newsworthy. At any given point in time, tons of people want tons of interesting things to happen for tons of interesting reason. So Marc Summers REALLY WANTING Nickelodeon to reboot Double Dare wouldn’t ordinarily make the Screen Junkies cut.

So why are we talking about it? For two reasons. Firstly, t’s a painfully slow news day, and if you thought the Married…with Children Walk of Fame induction ceremony was tedious…oh, brother. It seems as though people are only interested in the iPhone and Ray Rice today. Secondly, and more legitimately, Marc Summers has apparently been feuding with Nickelodeon for the past 20 years or so. When you think of long-running feuds, you think of US-Russia, the Hatfields-McCoys, and the Cowboys-Redskins. Not Marc Summers-Nickelodeon.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Summers has said that he’s very interested in hosting a reboot of Nick’s Double Dare, the game show in which gets sloppy and wear bizarre red and blue outfits as though they were in a cult.

it turns out that he DOESN’T think he’s too old to host, but he DOES think the network sucks, saying, “Well, I have all sorts of issues with Nickelodeon these days… There’s somebody in upper management who for some reason has decided that they hate my guts. Meanwhile, their network is going in the dumper.”

Maybe they don’t like you because you go around telling people that the network is going in the dumper. Whatever that is.

We’ll see where this goes, but hopefully Marc Summers’ dream will exit the dumper and become a reality.

Jeff Goldblum, a noted actor, and increasingly-noted jazz singer, took to Late Night with Seth Meyers last night, and offered up the audience a special treat.

The Jurassic Park actor discovered that the Internet had written lyrics for the film’s theme song, and he sang them with gusto. Why was he on Seth Meyers? Dunno. Why was he singing made-up Jurassic Park lyrics? Because he’s Jeff Goldblum, and the older he gets, the less wrong he can do.

It’s all very charming and fun, and it makes me wish he was around to sing fake lyrics to songs more often. The Big Chill? Igby Goes Down? Where are their themes?

So watch him give it up for that movie with the dinosaurs and Newman.

While the success of the cast of Married…with Children is a bit of a mixed-bag, don’t ever say that they weren’t their for each other. Or do say that. It’s really not very important what you say about the cast of an almost 30 year-old sitcom.

The gang that helped change the dynamic of family sitcoms forever got back together to celebrate Peggy Bundy’s (Katey Sagal) induction onto the Hollywood walk of fame. In addition to her role has Peggy, Sagal has made herself known as the voice of Leela on Futurama, and in the FX show Sons of Anarchy.

Her star was placed next to co-star Ed O’Neill’s, which is awesome, because that’s the very thing Al Bundy would have hated.

There’s a lot of myth and lore around Walt Disney. The man created what is arguably the largest entertainment machine in the history of the universe, and he did so in a very entrepreneurial fashion. So credit to him there. But he didn’t just coast right into becoming “Walt Disney.” Nope. He had to grind it out, as this trailer for Walt Before Mickey shows us.

And if you’re thinking that Walt Disney looks familiar, it’s Thomas Ian Nicholas, who is best known as the other-other guy from American Pie, and Henry Rowengartner from Little Big League. Haven’t seen much of him recently. Napoleon Dynamite‘s Jon Heder plays Walt’s brother Roy.

That’s some inspired, weird casting. Check out the trailer and buy a ticket to Disneyland.

Anyone who’s ever had the privilege of participating in a pub quiz knows the fun that can be had when friends, booze, and cheerful competition meld together. So naturally, NBC wants to bottle that magic and sell it to couch potatoes in sitcom form.

From Chris Moynihan, who helped bing us Veep, comes an untitled show about a group of friends who get together every week for a pub quiz. What else do we know? Well, THR tells us that the group of characters in question are millennials, and…that’s it! Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

Eh, Friends and The League were based around similarly thin premises, and they turned out okay, so let’s believe that a guy involved with Veep knows what he’s doing.

Besides, if they make a show about it, that means we can sort of experience it for ourselves just by laying around on our couch. Now if only they made a show about losing weight…

Do you want to live in a world where Jessica Rabbit is not the sexiest girl on the block? Me neither. But that’s what may have been, had an early (1983) effort by Disney called Roger Rabbit, found success and supplanted its successor, the 1988 Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

The video content is pretty unremarkable, except for all the hallmarks that remind us exactly how long ago 1983 was. It was a LONG time ago. You can tell because everything looks like shit, and a host is walking around with a full-on, elementary school-style tape recorder around his neck.

But back to the matter at hand: This failed attempt featured Paul “Pee-Wee” Reubens as the voice of the rabbit himself, and a less-than-sultry Jessica Rabbit. Let’s take a moment to appreciate how everything turned out.

If you’re the type of person who complains about your DVR filling up, our old friend Tivo would like to remind you that a) they still exist, and b) they can solve that problem by offering up their $5,000 DVR. It’s appropriately called the Tivo Mega, and it will CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

Just kidding. If your life was capable of being changed by a giant DVR, then it wasn’t much in the first place.

Short of owning a TV network, I’m not sure why someone would want this thing. Most every series is available on Netflix, Hulu, or one of the other bastard services, and $5,000 pays for like 40 years of subscription. Seriously.

BUT, if you’re one of those people who likes to have everything at their very fingertips, and doesn’t like pirating stuff, then this is probably the right device for you.

Note: If you’re DVRing in HD, you can only store 4,000 hours of shows, not the 26,000 mentioned in the title. What a crock.

It’s no surprise that after the success of 21 Jumpstreet, and the meta-success of 22 Jumpstreet, that Sony, after winking towards the absurdity of the concept, is giving us 23 Jumpstreet. At this point, I bet they’re getting to know their neighbors really well.

The end of the last installment had our heroes decked out as doctors at medical school. So is that where this is going? Maybe. I don’t know what resides at 23 Jumpstreet. It might just be a convenience store or an H&R Block, which would be boring as shit.

Here are some of the directions the sequel could be taken, per Variety at the end of 22 Jumpstreet:

23 Jump Street: Medical School
24 Jump Street: Foreign Exchange
25 Jump Street: Semester at Sea
26 Jump Street: Arts School
27 Jump Street: Culinary School
28 Jump Street: Veterinary School
29 Jump Street: Sunday School
30 Jump Street: Flight Academy
31 Jump Street: Ninja Academy
32 Jump Street: Fireman Academy
33 Jump Street: Generations
34 Jump Street: Return of the Ghost
35 Jump Street: Traffic School
36 Jump Street: Military School
37 Jump Street: Scuba Class
38 Jump Street: Dance Academy
39 Jump Street: The Electronic Game
40 Jump Street: The Retirement Home
41 Jump Street: Magic School
42 Jump Street: Beauty School
43 Jump Street: Mariachi School
2121 Jump Street

I know I’m a pushover, but those all sound AWESOME! Here’s to hoping Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill never get old.

HBO, never one to let a week go by without getting us fired up about a potential new series or two, has given us a big tease this week: A crime show set in the 1950′s, all noir-ish, from literary genre master James Ellroy and regular ole’ badass director David Fincher.

Talks are preliminary, but they are talking, which is something. And if we all start talking abouttheir talks, this thing will probably take off. So get it trending on Friendster. Fincher has (unsurprisingly) long been a fan of Ellroy, and Ellroy has been a sometimes-fan of HBO, having praised Deadwood, but calling The Wire “bullshit.”

You have to love a guy who calls The Wire “bullshit.” Seriously. You must love him!

No more information is floating around, but this should be enough for us to assume that the show would be terrific.

Fox, clearly going through a sci-fi phase that we should just let pass, has announced it’s ordered a pilot for a series that will serve as a sequel to Minority Report, the Tom Cruise/Steven Spielberg film based on the book by Philip K. Dick. While it’s just a pilot, odds are this thing will get picked up, as Fox bought the pilot with something called a “put-pilot order” which means if they don’t make it a show, they owe some people a huge amount of money.

The show will take place ten years after the pre-cog program is terminated, and one of the former precogs join a detective who is “haunted by her past.” Hey, we’re all haunted by our pasts, lady. We just don’t make a big deal about it.

No word on when this sees air, but probably not before next fall.

As you may know, the long-gesticulating, divisive third installment of Ghostbusters is coming whether we like it or not, with Paul Feig stepping up to direct a cast of women, as he so often does. And while Bill Murray isn’t known to have anything to do with the film (OR WILL HE?), that didn’t stop him from offering up an ad hoc list of his choices to the Toronto Star.

And his list probably won’t surprise you in the least, leading me to believe that he may already know the cast.

  • Linda Cardellini (whom Paul Feig direct in Freaks and Geeks)
  • Melissa McCarthy (whom Paul Feig has cast in his four most recent films)
  • Kristen Wiig (who starred in Feig’s Bridesmaids)
  • Emma Stone (who is very hot)

Stone’s the only real surprise there.

This list is so on the nose, it’s almost depressing. I mean, it’s a good cast, but some newer blood than this would be nice in the world of Paul Feig.

It’s got 552 episodes under its belt, so it’s been bound to go back to the same well several, if not dozens, of times.

For a more sophisticated breakdown of that well-returning, Beutler Ink put together a handy infographic that spotlights the trends in the episodic plots.

While Weezer has, by most critical and commercial accounts, been on a downward slide since Maladroit, it makes sense that the principals of the band would examine other opportunities, and lead singer Rivers Cuomo found one…

In a comedy pilot called DeTour that he has sold to Fox. Now, it’s just a pilot, which means it’s about as valuable as, well, nothing, but it could get picked up. We’ll let you judge its worth.

The comedy focuses on a 30-something rockstar who, according to Deadline (via the A.V. Club), “unable to rationalize his success and worried that he may not have the tools to repeat it, walks away from the spotlight at the height of his fame in an effort to rediscover the parts of his life he missed while he was busy becoming a massive success.”

So it MIGHT be a little autobiographical. Maybe. No word on the status of the pilot, but we should know something later this year. If it gets us a respite from the torrent of Weezer releases, we’re all for it.

The non-stop Simpsons marathon on FXX has catapulted the network into the top 5 cable channels, and, wanting to keep that momentum past the 12-day marathon, the network has announced that it will be all-Simpson, all-the-time.

Almost.

5 nights a week, it will air at least four hours of Simpsons, ensuring that there will ALWAYS be something good on during primetime. This will leave a little sliver carved out for Parks and Recreation reruns, and you can just backfill the rest of your day with work and sleep.

It’s a brilliant system, and just another step towards what I’m calling the Simpsons Renaissance of 2014.

The schedule will be as follows:

Mondays will be 6PM-12AM

Tuesdays will be 8PM-12AM

Wednesdays will be free time (feel free to go to a bar, speak with your family, watch DVR’d Simpsons reruns…whatever)

Thursday will be  6PM-12AM

Fridays will be 8PM-12AM

Saturdays will be free time (exercise, eat some oatmeal)

Sundays will be 4PM-8PM

Enjoy the schedule that will now dictate the rest of your life.

As if Louis C.K. and Zach Galifianakis didn’t have enough going on in their professional lives, they’re adding one more project to the pile as FX announced that they’re picking up Baskets, a show about…clowning.

The ten episode pickup revolves around a man named Chip Baskets, played by Zach G., who becomes disillusioned with his 9-5 life, and enrolls in a prestigious clown college in France, only to fail out, then relegated to life as a rodeo clown.

I don’t have much more to go on, but even if I did, would I need to? It’s a show about Zach Galifianakis as a clown college dropout.

Louis C.K. is a co-creator and the show will begin filming next year for a premiere in 2016, probably.

Because it’s the 2010′s, and everything that exists has to be a food truck, pop-up shop, or infiltrated by a flash mob, Warner Bros. has announced that they’re going to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Friends premiere by recreating the hangout of the gang, Central Perk, in NYC for a month.

It won’t actually be a business, but will give away free coffee, offer contests, and weekly singalongs to Phoebe’s songs. Hmm. That sounds more like “hell” than a coffee shop, but whatever.

The shop will be at 199 Lafeyette St. in Soho, which means rent on this thing for a month will probably be around $72 million.

And, yes, James Michael Tyler, who plays Gunther, will be there making “special appearances.” I mean, as special as an appearance by James Michael Tyler can be.

The coffee shop will be open from September 17th to October 18th.

In a sad testament to how real the dangers of the reality television forerunner Cops really are, a longtime cameraman for the show, Bryce Dion, died of a gunshot injury in a shootout between police and a gunman. The showdown took place outside an Omaha-area Wendy’s where police confronted an armed robbery suspect.

The gunman was also killed after sticking up the Wendy’s only to find the police, and the film crew waiting outside. A shootout followed, which apparently left the fast food restaurant’s windows riddled with bullet holes and two men mortally injured.

The crew had been in Omaha filming for much of the summer for Spike TV, which has been airing the show after it was dropped by FOX.

There aren’t many more details available as of now, but what more is really needed? A tragic incident that, sadly, is not surprising, given the show’s history of putting film crew in harm’s way.

There has long been talk of a Blade Runner sequel, despite the fact that it’s pretty much the perfect science fiction film and should be left alone. Because, hey, people said that about Alien and Aliens, and we got a bunch of crappy sequels from those guys.

In a recent interview, director Ridley Scott indicated that Harrison Ford was “of course” returning, that the script was written and “damn good,” though that might just mean “Prometheus-good,” and that the only real bottleneck was the matter of timing. He did convey that the project would occur sooner than Prometheus 2, which I guess is good because I don’t think many people are in a hurry for Prometheus 2.

Considering the first Blade Runner was based on Philip Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, it’s unclear what the source material will be for the sequel, but I’m guessing it is probably just some Twilight fan-fic like 50 Shades of Grey was.

The post Recent Interview With ‘Sopranos’ Creator David Chase Indicates Tony Soprano Isn’t Dead appeared first on Screen Junkies.

You probably haven’t thought about Tony Soprano‘s fate in a few years, have you? At least, probably not since the tragic death of James Gandolfini. Well, in an interview with Vox (caveat emptor, the article is VERY long), David Chase revealed that Tony Soprano isn’t dead.

But it’s not really that open-and-shut. The exchange between the interviewer and Chase sounds like a real nightmare, as excerpted by Vulture:

I had been talking with Chase for a few years when I finally asked him whether Tony was dead. We were in a tiny coffee shop, when, in the middle of a low-key chat about a writing problem I was having, I popped the question. Chase startled me by turning toward me and saying with sudden, explosive anger, “Why are we talking about this?” I answered, “I’m just curious.” And then, for whatever reason, he told me. …
…[W]hen he spoke about Tony and the question, [Chase] was laconic.
Just the facts and no interpretation.
He shook his head “no.” And he said simply, “No he isn’t.”

Well, there you have it. An interviewer pestered David Chase about the fate a of a character who was played by a close friend of Chase’s who died, and he snapped and blurted something out.

Whether or not this was a sincere response then begs the question of whether or not this take is revisionist based on the death of Gandolfini. Who knows. It’s likely that David Chase didn’t even know if Tony lived or died at the end, and if that’s the case, we might as well ask a person working at Starbucks what the mob boss‘ fate was.

It didn’t take long for Netflix to re-up on Bojack Horseman, the animated comedy featuring Will Arnett as a washed-up former actor horse, surrounded by lots of familiar voices and close to no plot. Netflix, aside from Arrested Development, hasn’t has a lot going on for original comedies, and it’s a safe bet that Bojack didn’t require a House of Cards-type budget, so sure. Why not?

Netflix doesn’t share its “ratings” with the public because it doesn’t have any advertisers to satisfy, but whatever criteria they were using must have been met, because that was a pretty quick decision to give the show 12 more episodes. No date has been set yet, but just be patient, ok?

I’m about four episodes into the series, and it’s…it’s…fine. It’s funny at parts, and there’s a great cast of voices, but the show seems a little one-note already, and nothing really happens over the course of the show, which depends on Family Guy-style cutaways for many of its jokes.

Enough commentary. Bojack Horseman returns for a second season, which means it’s already half as successful as The Killing.

If you thought living without a cell phone these days is hard, just imagine how difficult it will be to watch a group of fictional people whine about not having a cellphone. Not fun, eh? Welp, FOX thinks you’re up to the challenge by bringing you All Together Now, a show about a group of friends who spur cellular technology and “engage each other for as long as they can stand it.”

Ugh. This sounds terrible. But that makes sense, considering it’s coming from Alec Sulkin, a co-producer of Family Guy, and the braintrust who brought us last season’s Dads starring Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi. The only other detail we know is that it will be an ensemble comedy. The more the merrier, I guess.

The fact that this the show is based on people not going on their cell phones is pretty alarming. I mean, sure, in real life, we’re all tethered to the damn things, but it’s not like we tune into True Blood or Curb Your Enthusiasm and the characters are constantly texting on their phones. The only show like that is The Newsroom, and we don’t mind it in that instance, because it shuts the characters up for a second.

I’m going to write a show about people who never wrestle bears.

Remember how you were just getting nostalgic for a simpler time when Friday nights greeted you with crappy family comedies on ABC? John Stamos heard you, so he’s putting back together Full House with the original creator of the show Jeff Franklin.

Details are sketchy, and nothing is set in stone (we’ve been jerked around before), per the current reports, but TV Guide, which I would expect to be an expert resource on Full House goings-on, is reporting that the show will be coming back with most of the original cast intact, save for Lori Laughlin and the Olsens, who no one really cares about that much anyway, so they can go ahead and stay gone.

Full House interest has peaked a bit this year as the trio of Stamos, Saget, and Coullier appeared in a yogurt commercial during the Super Bowl, and then reunited dressed as their characters on Fallon. Yes, that’s what I’m calling a “peak” in interest. I have to tie this article together with some loose narrative, don’t I?

No plot details are available, but looking back on the entire first run, I’m STILL not sure we’re able to tell you what Full House plot details were then.

Fans of the NFL know that if you want to see any games that aren’t nationally televised (about 75% of them), you’ll need to get the Sunday Ticket, which gives you access to every game played. They also know that if you want to get Sunday Ticket, you’ll have to get DirecTV, which has an exclusive arrangement with the NFL.

NOW, NFL fans are learning that it’s going to stay that way for a long while, as the NFL and DirecTV have reportedly reached an agreement that will extend that exclusivity for eight or so more years. This extension does not bode well for those who thought they would be able to get streaming access to games much as people can with the MLB, NHL, and NBA.

Bummer.

DirecTV was paying about $1 billion per season for the rights, and now it’s looking like $1.3-1.4 billion, so the NFL has reason to make them happy. Does it make the fans happy?

Eh. I suppose if you already have DirecTV and like it, you’re happy. Otherwise, probably not.

Glover is now getting cast as Spider-Man, albeit only for his voice, on the Disney Channel XD, and not as Peter Parker. Rather, Glover will play Spider-Man as the half-Hispanic, half-Black character Miles Morales, who exists as Spider-Man in an alternate timeline in which Parker dies.

Considering it’s 2014, the plot and pacing of Action Comics #1 might not thrill you, but it’s got significance in an entirely different way. It features the first appearance of Superman, a superhero who you may have heard of. The issue was published in June of 1938, and one near-mint condition copy just was sold at auction for $3.2 million bucks.

Rather than going up at Christie’s or Sotheby’s, the comic went to bid on eBay, and a portion of the proceeds went to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

It’s thought that there are no more than 50 copies of this comic in existence, so it’s no surprise that habitually cash-strapped Nicolas Cage picked one up for $2.16 million a few years ago. Look like he’s got an eye for investment, as I’m guessing that this rare comic is worth far more when its previous owner is eccentric actor Nicolas Cage.
